Customer Reviews of RangeMax NEXT Wireless PCI Adapter
This card is garbage11/19/2010
I bought this card for my wife's Win 7 (64-bit) box downstairs because: 1) I (used to) love the Netgear brand (am using a Netgear WGT624v3 router that has been flawless) 2) her machine is too far from the router for wired to be feasible I have been an IT professional for 13 years, and a hobbyist for much longer than that, so this is not any sort of a user error issue (no ID Ten T error ;-) I installed the card and drivers following the doc to the letter (using the CD that came with it), and it connected with no problems. Immediately after it connected I went to grab the latest and greatest driver set for Win 7, and again, following the instructions, installed them. The drivers installed as a Broadcom card, and the card stopped functioning. So I rolled back to the older drivers, and within 2 days, the card stopped functioning again. Spent 3 hours on the phone with netgear support, where I finally got them to admit that, even tho they are listed as win 7 compatible, they are truly not. Checked the netgear forums, and I found many complaints about this card running (or not running, more precisely) under win 7 64 bit. Jerked the card, and back to best buy it goes. No more netgear for me. This card may or may not work with older MS OS's, but if Win 7 is your game, avoid this card.
This card does what it claims! the whole buying and shipping experience was flawless. Seconds to buy from Buy.com, arrived in less than a week on free shipping. Items in box all new and in the expected condition. Once it was installed, and the software glitch was cleared with netgear support, the signal was much faster (registered 14532 on speedtest.net, and my pc is in the basement a floor and 2 rooms away from the 834n router)... However, the reason I gave it 4 out of 5 in overall satisfaction is we had to go through 3 hours of support and 2 supervisors to find out why the card was showing that it is not recognized by the system(Vista 64). After one operator clearly lied saying that he asked his supervisor who told him this card does not work with vista 64, we finally got to a supervisor that told us that the card is actually there (we tested it) but Vista 64 is too powerful, it overwhelms the cards software and while it does not show any improvement in signal in the computer test icon while it actually is there! we tested the signal and confirmed that it is performing beautifully! I do have the netgear rangemax 834n router, which is listed as the best match for this card(it does say that it improves b/g performance also. I am building up a second pc for my basement, I will get this card again!
