Editor's Note With astounding animation, inspirational messages, and endearing characters, Pixar Animation Studios (THE INCREDIBLES, CARS) and Walt Disney Pictures have whipped up something special with RATATOUILLE. A rat named Remy (Patton Oswalt) lives in Paris with a dream (and the talent) to be a chef. Opting to raid the kitchens of Paris rather than the garbage cans and sewers of the city with his family, Remy is inspired by the philosophy of one of the city's most legendary chefs, the late Gusteau (Brad Garrett). One night, Remy can't resist practicing his skill in Gusteau's restaurant. While his guard is down, Remy is discovered by a klutzy young man, Linguini (Lou Romano), who cleans the kitchen. Together Remi and Linguini become a culinary duo, with Remy playing puppeteer by concealing himself under Linguini's chef's hat. Remy pulls Linguini's hair to direct his hands, helping to bring Remy's creations to life. Soon Gusteau's restaurant becomes the talk of the town--but would it still be the toast of Paris if everyone knew a rat was running the show? The positioning of a city-dwelling rodent with a distinct palate and the aptitude to concoct mouthwatering dishes in one of Paris's finest eateries is the winning ingredient in RATATOUILLE's inspirational presentation. And Remy's brave conviction to break away from the pack and risk his life for what he loves and believes in gives the film a positive and heartwarming message for all ages.

Brad Bird may be one of the few animated filmmakers working today who understands what the concept of a "family film" means...Following The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, Bird has turned his attention to the sewers and kitchens of Paris with Ratatouille...while Ratatouille misses the pinnacle achieved by The Incredibles (considered by some to be the best-ever computer animated film), it provides solid entertainment and shows why something like Shrek the Third should be cast aside...Coupled with Surf's Up, Ratatouille offers movie-goers a recent rarity: back-to-back quality animated family films. It has been years since we have seen something similar, and the effectiveness of this movie helps to wash away some of the bad aftertaste left by Shrek the Third. For parents looking to spend time in a theater with their kids or adults who want something lighter and less testosterone-oriented than the usual summer fare, Ratatouille offers a savory main course. - James Berardinelli

Forget Of Mice and Men. In The Incredibles' director Brad Bird's world, it is more like Of Rats and Gastronomy. It looks like he has been watching the Food Network or those Saturday afternoon PBS cooking shows and taking notes. He has come up with his own winning recipe involving kitchen-invading rodents; a clumsy, but ambitious restaurant garbage boy; an underhanded chef; a vicious critic (typecasting!); and Paris. The dish is called Ratatouille, a scrumptious and savory entrŽe, delivered with wit and aplomb. It is the most delicious offering yet from those wizards at Pixar...This is a frankly more mature creation than any Pixar offering before it and a lot of it is going to sail over most kids' heads. Nevertheless, it is colorful enough, and Remy and Linguini are goofy enough that the little ones will still be fully engaged. Like Looney Tunes, Ratatouille works beautifully on multiple levels. As might be expected, the animation is fantastic...Even the food, including the titular vegetable dish, looks fabulous. - Pam Grady
