Author Info
David Almond
Ever since David Almond was six-years-old and scribbling on little pieces of paper, he wanted to be a writer. The goal of becoming a writer stayed with him as he grew older, but he was only writing "bits and pieces" of things at that point in his life. When he reached his late 20s, he realized he had to become very serious about it if he was REALLY going to do it for a living. David held many jobs before he became an award-winning author--he was a mailman, a teacher, an editor, and even a brush salesman! Before he wrote for a kids, he wrote for adults, but he knew that he wanted to write for young readers someday--he feels that they kids and teens have a great ability to mix imagination with reality. Since becoming a full-time author, David visits schools and bookstores, he sometimes has to make sure that he has time to write at all! When able, he aims for 1,000 words a day, but if he's feeling especially productive, he has written upwards of 3,000! His first novel for young readers, entitled SKELLIG, was first published in England, and won the 1998 Carnegie Medal and the 1998 Whitbread Children's Book of the Year. When SKELLIG arrived in the States in 1999, it received a Michael J. Printz Honor award. His second book, KIT'S WILDERNESS, which was published in the US in March 2000, also received many positive reviews and a large reading audience. When David isn't writing, he likes to spend time with his family, take long walks, and listen to music.
Praise
"The baby's happy coos, even as Iraq-bound planes fly overhead, ground this hypnotic, sensuous foray into the nature of war, truth, art and the savagery of humanity."
"Almond's story is a passionate plea for peace, and the putting away of weapons of war."
From the Publisher
Annotation Set in early 21st-century England, this combination of a fairy tale and the grim reality of a troubled world begins with 14-year-old Liam Lynch following an insistent raven to a beautiful, abandoned baby. With just a note and some coins, she opens up a world of foster care, children in peril, and new friendships to Liam. When the baby is placed in foster care before Liam's family can adopt her, he meets Crystal, who envies his life, and Oliver, who harbors a very dark secret. Intensely emotional and carefully written, this is one of David Almond's more compelling young adult novels.
