Review It's a sign of the times that in a film like Andrea Arnold's Red Road, with the omnipresent CCTV cameras controlled from a central command called City Eye and the ability to peek into practically every corner of the city, is barely remarked upon. This is not a film that is going to waste time maundering about the implications of ubiquity of surveillance in 21st century life (especially in the British Isles, which has a particular fetish for filming their citizens at all times); instead it's just one more sad detail of the characters' shabby, limited lives in a shabby and limited world...Though possessed of a certain modern lo-fi thriller mindset, with its stark mise-en-scene and handheld camerawork, Arnold's work has a thrilling rawness that's really more akin to Ken Loach than Hitchcock (one of her many superb stars, the puckish Martin Compston, starred in Loach's Sweet Sixteen). Red Road is a film so dedicated to its workaday Glaswegian roots that the English subtitles which appear seem at first to be a joke (could their accents be that thick?) are quickly clung to like a life line (yes, indeed they are that thick). There's no obvious, touristy totems of Scottishness; but for the accents, the average outsider could believe the action to be taking place in any working-class British Isles city.

Review Sensual, dark in every sense, but a touch derivative, "Red Road" reps an impressive feature debut for Brit writer-helmer Andrea Arnold, an Oscar-winner for her knockout short "Wasp." Cannes contender about a Glaswegian surveillance camera operator (Kate Dickie) seeking out an ex-jailbird (Tony Curran) for mysterious reasons builds up an atmospheric miasma of suspense, then fumbles the last act with an overwrought reveal. Given its unflinching take on femme sexuality and expressionist visuals, comparisons with work by Jane Campion ("In the Cut") and Lynne Ramsay (Morvern Callar") seem inevitable...Treatment of femme sexuality is complex and unflinching, calling to mind not just the aforementioned Campion and Ramsay, but also the portrait of neurotic promiscuity in Carine Adler's "Under the Skin" and to some extent Gallic helmers like Claire Denis and Catherine Breillat. Although the sex scene is hot and heavy, cutaways to the reflection of a lava lamp in a night-darkened window add a cooling touch...Perfs, especially from lead Dickie whose face expresses much and mouth says little, richly enhance pic's overall effect. Curran, feral, sexy and menacing all at once, is also strong, while Compston and Press, both bigger stars at this point, do good work with relatively small parts.

Andrew O'Hehir, ...dynamite, the kind of sexy, paranoid, creepily atmospheric picture that invades all your senses at once.
Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News ...skillfully exposes the raw pain just under the skin of a seemingly ordinary citizen.
Ken Fox, TV Guide ...Arnold makes a startlingly assured debut with this low-key psychological chiller.
Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times A spellbinding, intelligent thriller that takes its time to get where it's going but is well worth the trip.
Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun Surprisingly moving and intellectually satisfying.
Paula Nechak, Seattle Post-Intelligencer ...a taut, unexpected study that asks many questions about retribution and redemption.
Shawn Levy, Portland Oregonian ...a wonderful debut, despite all the pain you may feel watching it.
