Based on a true story, REQUIEM revolves around a female university student who seeks solace in the words of a priest after suffering an epileptic fit; she also still bears the scars of a punishingly strict upbringing. Unfortunately, the priest believes she is possessed by the devil, leading to further pain and suffering for a woman who is already delicately balanced on the precipice of insanity.
New York Times
"Balancing Ms. Huller's astonishing physical performance with an intimate, naturalistic style, REQUIEM is a moving study of a tortured young woman more at peace with medieval ritual than with modern medicine." 10/20/2006 p.E12
4 stars out of 5 -- "Grainy film stock and a dreary palette of browns and greys conjure an oppressive period atmosphere, while Huller's screen debut is unnervingly intense." 12/01/2006 p.41
"REQUIEM has been directed, by Hans-Christian Schmid, with something resembling the von Trier touch: a jittery, cleansing naturalism, all the better to root the uncanny in the surfaces of this world." -- Grade: A- 11/03/2006 p.54
Sight and Sound
"REQUIEM offers a refreshingly sober, intelligent take on its subject....For all its understatement, this is a magnificently angry film." 12/01/2006 p.71-2
