Editor's Note
Filmmakers Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington pay a visit to Afghanistan's Korengal Valley to spend a year with the Second Platoon, a besieged squadron who dubbed their stronghold Outpost Restrepo in honor of their fallen comrade PFC Juan Restrepo. An al-Qaeda and Taliban stronghold, Korengal Valley sees some of the fiercest fighting in the War on Terror. At Outpost Restrepo, every shot fired is personal, and every target hit a gift to a fallen friend.

Expert Review Restrepo - DVD Review

There's a valley in the eastern part of Afghanistan known as the Korengal which is one of the worst places one could ever fight a war, or work as a journalist. The mountains around it are rocky, forested, and steep. Defenders have their pick of well-hidden sniper positions and easy escape routes. It's right by the Pakistani border and has never been truly conquered. The Russians left the Korengal alone and even Alexander the Great supposedly gave the place and its rugged inhabitants - relatively recent converts to Islam, the men dye their beards red and line their eyes with kohl, while the women wear bright colors and don't veil themselves - a pass. In the you-are-there documentary Restrepo, viewers are made to understand why this is a place that rejects foreign occupation with a nearly magnetic repulsion....read the full review

Total Film
3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he sense of bewilderment and futility speaks for itself." 10/01/2010

Uncut
5 stars out of 5 -- "The film cuts between footage shot in the field, and interviews conducted later with the soldiers who survived the deployment. It's all the more potent for having no ideological cart to push." 11/01/2010

New York Times
"[A]n impressive, even heroic feat of journalism....There is nothing especially fancy or innovative here, just a blunt, sympathetic, thorough accounting of the daily struggle to stay alive and accomplish something constructive." 06/25/2010

Wall Street Journal
"RESTREPO teaches without preaching or taking a position on the wisdom of the Afghanistan war. As you listen to the men, and watch them on their perilous patrols, you learn that they've been forced to make the best of severely limited resources." 06/25/2010

A.V. Club
"The combat footage Junger and Hetherington got for RESTREPO is unlike anything ever seen in a documentary; it's raw, relentless, and made all the more unsettling because neither the soldiers nor the audience can see who's doing the shooting." -- Grade: A- 06/24/2010

Sight and Sound
"[A] powerful, direct and beautifully crafted documentary....The interviews are frank and moving as the men tell of their experiences of death and suffering..." 11/01/2010
