From the Publisher:
Explores the relationship between the author and her mother, who spent time in a mental institution after attempting to murder her daughter as a result of the mental anguish over a love affair with another woman in 1958. Original.
Chana Wilson was just seven years old in 1958 when her mother, driven to despair by her attraction to other women, tried unsuccessfully to kill herself and was committed to a mental institution. Upon her mother's release, Wilson became her caretaker, and the two developed a deep and complex bond. Both came out as gay in the 1970s, entering a more joyful and open stage of life. In this memoir, Wilson, a psychotherapist and former broadcast journalist, reveals their battles with mental illness and homophobia and examines what goes on at the intersection of social mores and family ties.
