Great series!

by Ken on 3/19/2009

This is a great HBO series! Great scenes and acting. The DVDs even have a feature where you can have side historical facts displayed on the screen so this is a must have for anyone with an interest in ancient Rome. The only possible drawback is that the series is not at all family friendly for kids to view because it has a lot of graphic sex scenes and graphic violence. At times both the voilent and sexual scenes can be very crude and disturbing so I wouldn't buy this for educational purposes. Read More

beyond awesome

I am glad I didn't know about this series before, because watching on DVD was the best. It's better than any movie; it's elaborate, the acting is superb. Sad that it's canceled. Read More

Product Overview

The year is 44 B.C. Julius Caesar has been assassinated and civil war threatens to destroy the Republic. In the void left by Caesar's demise, egos clash and numerous players jockey for position. The brutally ambitious Mark Antony attempts to solidify his power, aligning himself with Atia, but coming to blows with her cunning son Octavian, who has been anointed in Caesar's will as his only son and heir. Meanwhile Titus Pullo attempts to pull his friend Lucius Vorenus out of the darkness that has engulfed his soul in the wake of personal tragedy. For once again, the fates of these two mismatched soldiers seem inexorably tied to the fate of Rome itself.

This five disc collection includes all 10 episodes from The Complete Second Season of Rome!

ReviewSource DVD Verdict
Review Rome upholds the tradition of HBO dramas such as The Sopranos, Deadwood, or The Wire with a sprawling cast and intricate storyline...I've seen my share of sword and sandal epics, but not until the joint HBO/BBC production of Rome did I feel that I was seeing ancient Rome as a living, breathing place. Like the best science fiction stories, Rome creates an immersive world all its own. This Rome is by turns dingy and grand, both familiar and alien. Above all, this Rome feels real. This being an HBO production, the sex and violence flow as freely as the wine in this version of ancient Rome...This is the sort of television series that shines on DVD because it's rich and entertaining enough for multiple viewings. Rome enthralls because it doesn't simply exist to show off fancy sets, CGI cityscapes, and period costumes. Beneath the historical trappings, we have a compelling story filled with interesting characters.

Brian Lowry, Variety ...a lavish series that offers many lusty pleasures similar to the net's other period drama, "Deadwood."
