Author Bio
Arnold Adoff
Adoff is best known as a poet and anthologist whose work often celebrates racial pride and heritage. Born and raised in the Bronx, New York to a family that treasured their European Jewish heritage, Adoff began writing poetry as a teenager. He attended City College of New York and Columbia University's graduate school. Later, as a teacher in the Harlem section of New York City, he collected poetry by African-American writers to share with his students. This collection became the basis for his first book, I AM THE DARKER BROTHER: AN ANTHOLOGY OF MODERN POEMS BY NEGRO AMERICANS, which was published in 1968. In 1988 he was awarded the NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children.
