Simply the very best epic fantasy

by T. D. on 11/2/2006

I've read through Brooks and Goodkind. While I can't wait for the next George R. R. Martin release I know it will pale in comparison to Robin Hobb's "Farseer Trilogy". The 'Assassin' books are simply wonderful. A full epic in just three books. No more 5, 6, 12 or more redundant tomes before you reach a conclusion. A delightful journey by a highly skilled, knowledgeable and talented writer who has a unique imagination that comes across as totally realistic and highly believable. You can "see" the characters. A page turner throughout. You'll experience emotions that a book, especially an epic fantasy, very rarely elicits. (Several time I had to stop reading just to gather myself). By the end of book 3 not only do you feel totally satisfied but you get the added bonus, if you choose (and you will), to take the adventures of Fitz and the Fool even further with the follow-up "Tawney Man Trilogy". A complete story by itself but best read after the three Assassin (Farseer)books. It just keeps getting better and better. Read More

Editors Note Young Fitz, the illegitimate son of the noble Prince Chivalry, is ignored by all royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has had him tutored him in the dark arts of the assassin. He has barely survived his first, soul-shattering mission, and returns to the court where he is thrown headfirst into the tumult of royal life. With the King near death, and Fitzs only ally off on a seemingly hopeless quest, the throne itself is threatened. Meanwhile, the treacherous Red Ship Raiders have renewed their attacks on the Six Duchies, slaughtering the inhabitants of entire seaside towns. In this time of great peril, it soon becomes clear that the fate of the kingdom may rest in Fitz's hands--and his role in its salvation may require the ultimate sacrifice.
Editors Note 1 Barely escaping with his life after his first mission, young Fitz returns to the chaotic royal court. With King Shrewd near death and Fitz's only ally off on a futile quest, the throne is ripe for the taking. And as the Red Ship Raiders brutalize the Six Duchies, the kingdom's fortunes-and Fitz's own fate--hang in the balance.
Annotation With the Red Ship raiders aggressively lapping at the shore of the Six Duchies, this is not the ideal time for an exchange of power. But nevertheless, ailing King Shrewd might die at any moment, leaving the kingdom's heir, Prince Verity, with a precarious situation. Thankfully, King Shrewd had the foresight to train his bastard grandson, FitzChivalry Farseer, as an assassin in the ancient magic tradition, assigning him the critical task of protecting Verity and his wife. With bravery and cunning, Fitz battles the Red Ship raiders and other enemies of the crown in ROYAL ASSASSIN, Robin Hobb's second book in her fantasy adventure FARSEER trilogy.
