|The Royle home is no palace. Space is cramped and the walls are stained yellow by nicotine. Brain-dead conversation is set against the continuous drone of the television. In charge of the remote control is the skinflint patriarch, Jim Royle, a slob who sounds off while his long-suffering wife, Barbara, runs around after him. Daughter Denise, an aspiring hairdresser, lazes around the house obsessing about her appearance and worrying that her fianc Dave doesn't appreciate her. The only moving part of the household is the youngest Royle, Anthony, a surly teenager and general dogsbody who is constantly dispatched to buy more cigarettes. Includes six episodes from The Complete First Season of The Royle Family: Bills, Bills, Bills; Making Ends Meet; Sunday Afternoon; Dad's Birthday; Another Woman; and Wedding Day.|
Editor's NoteCreated by Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash, THE ROYLE FAMILY is an unusual sitcom that proved tremendously popular in its native Britain. The action--or lack of it--mostly takes place in the living room of a family whose last name is Royle. Together they slump into comfortable yet tatty chairs, sip from endless cups of tea, and are entertained by the drone of the always-on television set in the corner of the room. The sloth-like Jim (Ricky Tomlinson) is the head of the family, and the rest of the cast is made up from his long-suffering wife, Barbara (Sue Johnston); their kids Denise (Caroline Aherne) and Antony (Ralf Little); Denise's husband, Dave (Craig Cash); and the batty Nanna (Liz Smith), whom Jim frequently ridicules. The show is punctuated by moments of complete silence as the Royle's stare, zombie-like, at the television set, with the hush usually broken by Jim as he seeks someone to berate or dispatches Anthony to fetch him some cigarettes from a nearby shop. A hugely entertaining slice-of-life that could have only come out of Britain, this release includes every episode from the first season of the show.
