Kat Martin has written more than 50 romances, and her work crosses all sub-genres, including contemporary, historical, paranormal and suspense. Born in California's Central Valley, she studied anthropology and history at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She was working as a real estate agent when she met her future husband, Larry Jay Martin, a fellow broker. "We were on opposing sides of a transaction," she has recalled. "I represented the seller and he represented the buyer." Larry was writing a Western novel at the time, and after they had dated for a while, he asked her to read the manuscript. She became his informal editor and subsequently decided to try her own hand at genre fiction. Her first romance, MAGNIFICANT PASSAGE, was published in 1988. Kat (whose given name is Kathleen) and Larry (who has written more than 20 popular Westerns under the name L. J. Martin) have collaborated only once, on the 1989 book TIN ANGEL, which they published under the pen name Kathy Lawrence. The two have made their home in Montana and have given up their real estate careers.
