Twelve-year-old Catherine just wants a normal life. Which is near impossible when you have a brother with autism and a family that revolves around his disability. She's spent years trying to teach David the rules-from "a peach is not a funny-looking apple" to "keep your pants on in public"-in order to stop his embarrassing behaviors. But the summer Catherine meets Jason, a paraplegic boy, and Kristi, the next-door friend she's always wished for, it's her own shocking behavior that turns everything upside down and forces her to ask: What is normal?
From the Publisher:
Having always tried to manage her autistic brother's embarrassing behavior, Catherine is excited about her new relationship with Jason and friendship with the girl next door, but when the pressures from home take their toll on her, Catherine acts out badly and so begins to consider reviewing and revising her own coping skills.
Annotation:
At 12, Catherine is on the cusp of her teen years, and having an especially hard time with her autistic little brother, David. While she loves him dearly, she constantly makes up rules for him so he'll be more normal, and she hopes the new next-door neighbor girl won't think he's crazy. When Catherine becomes friends with Jason, a wheelchair bound boy who communicates through pictures, she discovers both her capacity for affection and some unpleasant things about herself. A 2007 Newbery Honor Book.

Praise

"Catherine is an appealing and believable character, acutely self-conscious and torn between her love for her brother and her resentment of his special needs. Middle-grade readers will recognize her longing for acceptance and be intrigued by this exploration of dealing with differences." 03/01/2006

"A rewarding story that may well inspire readers to think about others' points of view." 04/17/2006
