Artistically shallow, but very entertaining.
If you're looking for something deep and edgy, don't pick Rune Soldier. If you're looking for something with animation quality you can feel coming out of your TV, don't pick Rune Soldier. If you're looking for something fun, enjoyable, and with very little plot (that is well-integrated and not rushed at the end), and something you can watch with other anime fans, pick Rune Soldier. The animation quality is almost painfully simplistic - you can tell cels were abused while making the show, but despite the animation quality (perhaps the series' only real flaw), the show is incredibly good - the English dub is downright excellent, with Jason Douglas as an excellent Louie and all the other roles filled in nicely. Fans of Fullmetal Alchemist's Edward Elric or Full Metal Panic!'s Kurz Weber will recognize Vic as Leonard, though the accent he assumes makes it difficult to hear immediately. The story is fun, mostly episodic but focuses more on the actual plot near the end, and this is hardly a detriment. The plot is serious in concept (the coup d'etat of a kingdom), but only a few moments really get overly serious. And even when they do, they are never dark - in short, the show never takes itself seriously, and is better off for it. So long story short, I highly recommend it as a fun or comedic show, just don't go in expecting incredible character depth or high animation production.
