Though only 18, Sabriel must take over her father's terrifying duties as the Abhorsen--the only person who can battle the dead and banish them past the nine gates so they can not return--and fight the unknown forces that seek to wreak havoc throughout Ancelstierre and the Old Kingdom. Raised in a posh boarding school in modern Ancelstierre, Sabriel discovers that her father seems to be caught in Death and must travel to a home she's never known, in the dangerous, charter magic-filled Old Kingdom. There, she discovers Mogget, a white cat who is not what he seems, and ventures into the unknown to save her father, or become the Abhorsen. A fast-paced, gripping read, this young adult fantasy novel is the first in the Abhorsen trilogy by the bestselling author Garth Nix.

"...an involving fantasy that takes off running and doesn't let up the pace until the final page....The pacing is exquisite, the suspense rising and falling and rising again until the truly edge-of-your-seat finale." - Janice M. Del Negro December 1996
