Samsung has manufactured this little gem. Forget about what you heard about TLC as this drive is rated for longer than tech will stay stagnant. Great warranty too from a company you know will be around for awhile. Was getting 356 writes and 450 MB reads through a thunderbolt adapter, transferred 150 GB in 4 minutes from my old RAID 0 ssd setup of same size. Works for me
This product really perked up my aging PC. The included software transferred my data making a mirror of my existed HD. It worked perfectly first time out. Can't beat the 259.00 price. This upgrade gave me a year or two before I need to replace my computer.
I installed the Samsung in my new touchscreen computer in a few minutes, and was blown away at how fast this ssd is. It loaded Windows 8 in app 11 seconds. All I could say was wow. The regular harddrive it replaced was fairly fast but this Samsung blew the doors off my computer. It's slimmer size was no problem installing in a computer that requires a slimmer unit.
Not as fast as the PRO series but for what I needed it worked great. Put into the new Mac mini and this thing is faster than my 830 series that I had in there previously. Had previously bought an OCZ with the latest firmware but the Mac Mini just wouldn't recognize it no matter what but this Samsung had no issues!
I have not purchase any through this site yet, however, I presently own 4 of them. I bought the first one and after two weeks of using it I was so impressed that I ordered 3 more. My PC starts up and is ready to go in 28 seconds. I contribute a lot of this to the SSD, however, I do have a beast of a machine that I built, quick run down of my system:
Asus Rampage IV Extreme MB (ROG),
Asus GForce GT 680 4 Gig Video card NVidia Chip set,
Intel Hexa Core Extreme CPU 3.3 GHz CPU,
8 x 8 Gig G Skill Ripjaw Series Ram DDR3,
Corsair HX 850 Gold PWS,
Corsair H100 Liquid CPU Cooler,
Corsair 500R Cardbide Mid Tower Case,
As I was saying I built a beast, but I am a big time gamer to say the least. I will only buy this brand of SSD due to the fact that they make all the electronic parts that it is constructed of instead of milling it out to other companies. That fact alone you tell you that they are the one to buy because it is entirely their product!
The SSD has been my go to refresh for an aging computer.
RAM gets cheaper and is an obvious fix, but when the user experience just feels a little . . . laggy . . . an SSD makes it feel like a new computer. I've upgraded numerous boxes with units from Intel, Micron, the usual SandForce vendors and since the 830, these Samsungs.
Of the bunch, Samsung is usually my go to drive as Intel tends to be priced higher and Micron hasn't done a competitive refresh in some time. (And after being bit twice I avoid the SandForce drives like the plague!)
Unless you need the absolute fastest (and at these speeds I doubt you'd be able to tell), are in a high IO environment (not your usual desktop user), and want to drop the power every so slightly for a laptop, there is no need to look at the Pro.
Execellent Drive but Rakuten Shipping needs improv
by RM on 7/10/2013
Overall a very good drive, stable and robust. And of course, large amount of space then what we usually expect on SSD. Rakuten shipping was terrible - they shipped it in air bubble bag which crushed the packaging while in transit. Luckily, the drive was okay inside.
This drive was easy to install, easy to use and greatly increased the speed of the rather low-end laptop. Samsung disk utilities are also easy to use. It seems kind of counter-intuitive to put a $300 SSD into a $450 laptop: but the laptop is only 2 years old and is adequate for the student in most ways. As more programs were installed, the laptop was getting slower to boot and slower during use. By cleaning up the original hard drive (including defrag) and then cloning it over to the SSD, the laptop perfomrance was greatly imporved. Didn't have to go through the pain of reinstalling the OS, updates and SW, either. An added bonus (when dealing with young people who use laptops everywhere and move them while they are running) is that the laptop is now shock-resistant as well.
I've got 3 of these 840's now -- two 500GB and one 250GB, and haven installed several more for clients. They are -- no contest -- the most reliable and compatible SSDs I've seen. They're also blazing fast. The Samsung drive-migration software (free download) works perfectly, and the "SSD Magician" tool is fantastic -- whether you're a geek or a novice, it makes it easy to do everything from updating SSD firmware to optimizing SSD-related Windows settings.
Samsung is also the only SSD brand I've found that doesn't have compatibility problems with certain Dell, Lenovo, or HP laptops, and certain desktop boards.
We have had no problems with this drive. It was installed in a Dell Latitude and it took just fine. We have learned to update firmware before we send a new SSD out the door, and that has helped our SSD reliability statistics. I recommend this drive if you want good quality and compatibility, though you can find cheaper drives.
With its simple 3-Step migration solution and industry-leading IOPS performance, the Samsung SSD 840 Series is the single best upgrade you can make for your PC. Samsung's new SmartMigration software takes the guesswork and headache out of moving your operating system and precious data to your new SSD. Once you're up and running, the 840 Series' amazing IOPS speeds empower you to multitask like never before.
Upgrading to an SSD is the easiest and most economical way to breathe new life into an aging PC. Today, most PC performance woes are the result of slow read and write speeds on behalf of the main storage device, not a lack of CPU performance. Upgrading to a Samsung SSD 840 Series can breathe new life into your old PC by enhancing boot-up speed, application loading, and multi-tasking performance.
