Performance

In the past I have had laser printers for black & white printing only, and have used inkjet printers for color printing. I am doing more color work these days, and I recently bought this printer because I wanted the speed, ease of use and (permanent) quality that comes from working with a laser printer, at an affordable cost (for laser printers).

This printer is serving me well! While the 1200dpi is not nearly as fine as most inkjet printer these days - I am impressed with the quality, speed and ease of use of this printer - and I love the double-sided printing!!! It makes creating things like mailers and calendars much easier - requiring a lot less intervention from me as I no longer have to turn over the paper and print on the back myself.

The duplex printing options and some additional layout options of being able to print multiple pages from a document onto a single page are nice. Now that I am using it for some more specific purposes, I have a few thoughts myself on some options that might be nice to add, but what is there is easy and pretty comprehensive.

The physical setup is more involved than any inket I've ever worked with - the drum, and all 4 toner cartridges need to be installed - but it all went together pretty well. I had some initial trouble with the printer recognizing that all the toner cartridges were installed, but after opening the door to the cartridges and re-seating them a couple of times, I got it to work - and haven't had trouble since (but I haven't had to replace any cartridges yet).

Setting the software up, and setting the printer up on the network was pretty easy. The installation of the basic print drivers was a snap. For network printing, I have a wireless network router from linksys and was able to plug this printer in to one of the ports on the router and set up the printer to have a static IP address (only had to do this on the printer - nothing on the router). It works great! I had to read a couple of pages in the manual to get this done, but once I got to the right menu on the printer - it was really easy. There is an option to install a wireless card on the printer, but I coudn't justify the added expense for ny needs.

The printer memory can be increased, but finding the compatible memory chips can be a chore, and the cost is not where I want it to be, but at a starting memory of 128MB, this printer works well. Maybe someday I will upgrade to 384MB, but not today.

I started out turning the printer on and off everytime I used it, but I have now just started to leave it on. It has a "sleep" mode that is noiseless and makes the warm-up and use of the printer much faster.

The jury is still out as to the ultimate cost/performance of the consumables. I've printed only a few thousand pages and haven't had to replace any cartridges yet. I think the duty cycle is supposed to be about 5,000 pages at 5% coverage, but I don't have my own usage statistics yet.

I'm very happy with this printer and would definitely recommend it to others!!!
