Editor's Note
MR. DEEDS: Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler) is content to run his pizzeria in the cozy New Hampshire hamlet of Mandrake Falls. His only further desire is to someday see one of his corny rhymes printed in a greeting card. Deeds is awarded much more when he inherits the $40 billion empire of a media tycoon, a distant relative. He is lured to New York City by unscrupulous partners of the deceased where he is preyed upon by greedy stockholders. He also makes ample fodder for tabloid journalists, notably reporter Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder), who poses as a school nurse from Iowa to win Deeds's heart and expose him as an idiot to her viewership. Against her will and her own sleazy principles, Babe falls for the charming naiveté of Deeds, whose fortune is by now in jeopardy.

Adam Sandler's man-child persona stands in for Gary Cooper in this remake of the 1936 MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN. Sandler and longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy have molded the Frank Capra romantic comedy into a perfect vehicle for its star and a love letter to New York City. Jared Harris as a tabloid TV host and John Turturro as an omnipresent Spanish butler shine in supporting roles.

BIG DADDY: Adam Sandler stars as Sonny Koufax, a perpetual adolescent whose girlfriend gives him the ultimatum of taking some responsibility into his life or saying goodbye to her. Magically, the child of his roommate turns up on his doorstep, and Sonny decides to take the child into his care to show the lady he is capable of being responsible.

50 FIRST DATES: Scatological and sentimental, satirical and sincere, 50 FIRST DATES pairs Adam Sandler with Drew Barrymore in a romantic comedy about short-term memory loss and the power of love in Hawaii. Henry Roth (Sandler), the local marina veterinarian, only dates tourists because he's afraid of commitment--that is, until he meets Lucy (Barrymore). Unfortunately, Lucy lost her short-term memory months ago in a car accident, and for her, each day is October 13th. She follows the same routine every day--breakfast at the same restaurant, pineapple-picking with her dad, and eventually bed time, where sleep wipes away her memory once again. Henry, however, refuses to be forgotten, and as his puppy love matures, he embarks on a quest to restore her memory, or at least be a part of her everyday routine. But vying for Lucy's attention isn't always easy. Sandler explores various approaches before making a video for Lucy to watch every morning, reminding her of who she is and what she's doing. The film includes a trademark Sandler ballad as Henry serenades Lucy with his ukulele and a series of familiar salacious puns. Rob Schneider plays Henry's best friend, a goofy native stoner whose physical hijinks earn numerous laughs. A cameo by Dan Akroyd as Lucy's doctor rounds out the cast.

Professional Reviews

James Berardinelli's ReelViews 8 of 10
[50] There's an element of Groundhog Day in 50 First Dates. Both films feature characters who repeatedly live the same day. Because of Lucy's memory loss, she awakens every morning and believes it to be a Sunday in October. Her father and brother are enablers, encouraging the fantasy in an effort to make her happy. But they wonder and worry what will happen when something occurs to permanently shatter the illusion. - James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10
[Big] The movie is filled to the limit with all the raunchy words allowed by the PG-13 rating, and you may be surprised how many and varied they are. There's a crisis when a social worker (Josh Mostel) turns up, and Sonny impersonates his roommate and claims to be the kid's dad. - Roger Ebert
