Editor's Note
A housewife with little knowledge of horse-racing fosters one of the greatest race horses of all time as the story of the 1973 Triple Crown winner comes to the screen in this inspirational underdog drama based on the novel SECRETARIAT: THE MAKING OF A CHAMPION by William Nack and starring Diane Lane and John Malkovich. Penny Chenery (Lane) is a devoted mother and housewife whose ailing father is the proprietor of Meadow Stables in Virginia. When her father becomes too ill to tend to his horses, Penny agrees to take over the stables despite her inexperience. Desperate, she turns to veteran horse trainer Lucien Laurin (Malkovich) to help show her the ropes. Up to this point, horse racing has been a decidedly male-dominated sport. But with Lucien's help, Penny prepares to prove that gender has no bearing on one's ability to breed a fast race horse. As Secretariat blasts out of the gates to leave his competition in the dust, the whole world watches in amazement, and a legend is born.

Having a great story to tell doesn't necessarily mean that one is going to end up with a great movie.  Is story an important component in putting together a film?  Unquestionably, but it isn't the only thing and while it can help minimize other issues, it doesn't always completely make up for them.  Watching 2010's Secretariat it is abundantly clear that the tale of the 1973 Triple Crown winner may be a good one, but that the movie fails to convey it in a satisfying way....read the full review

This is a family film, in the sense that few people would find anything objectionable in its content. On the other hand, Disney label aside, I don’t think too many kids are going to find it an entertaining watch. This is also a family film in that it is loaded with “teachable moments.” Kids might not find it enjoyable, but, like vegetables, you may want to make them take it anyway. The film opens with the perfect suburban life of Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) being disrupted by a phone call news that her mother has died. With kids and husband in tow she leaves Colorado for her parents’ Virginia horse farm. With mom gone and dad in the throes of dementia, it’s up to her to take the reins....read the full review
