| Macha is a band from Athens, Georgia, and like that other band closely associated with that city, it has a unique sound. As R.E.M. did with influences gleaned from the Velvet Underground and the Byrds, Macha does with what has come to be known as world music, fused with progressive rock and edgier indie rock. This band has been listening closely to North African folk music (especially the mystical, swirling sounds of the Pipers of Pan of Joujouka) and the clanging, circular tones of Indonesian gamelan (a marimba-like percussion instrument) music--witness the regal, mysterious "Until Your Temples Are Pounding." | |
| Elsewhere, Macha shows it's learned its lessons well: the dark, sardonic ones from the Fall in that band's mid-'80s quasi-rock phase, as well as those on entrancing the listener from late-'90s bands Tortoise and Mogwai. The final track, "Between Stranded Sonars," is a masterpiece--imagine the "Banana Album"-era Velvet Underground doing a powerful yet restrained blues-tinged improvisation. All this seeming "name-dropping" would mean little if Macha didn't put its own spin--balancing dissonance with melody, the familiar with the unusual--on all of its influences--just like that other band did. | |

- "...They drone, they shimmer, they play the hell out of the hammer dulcimer, and on [ANOTHER WAY] Macha work harder than ever at turning their heady Southeast Asian jams into songs....May give their neighbors R.E.M. food for thought."

- 4 out of 5 - "...further absorbs the zithers, vibraphone, hammered dulcimer, Indonesian gongs and horns directly into Macha's guitars, drums and Fun Machine keyboard, making for a singular mingling of powerful and delicate sounds..."
