A marvelous collection from "the greatest living writer of short stories in the English language" ("The New Yorker"), "Collected Stories" brings together 48 exquisitely rendered tales that brilliantly illuminate the human condition.
Annotation:
Forty-eight of William Trevor's murky, garrulous short pieces are together in SELECTED STORIES, a compendium of the best of Trevor's fiction since his last anthology in 1993. Trevor was born in County Cork, Ireland, and even though he has spent his years in England since 1950, Trevor's stories are often steeped in Irish legacies of trickery, wordplay, and the relationship between God and earthly living, not to mention the enduring friction between Catholics and Protestants. Disappointment or regret frequently shape the heart of the tales, such as "Cheating at Canasta," in which a widower battles memories of his lost wife while fulfilling her dying wish. Selected by the New York Times Book Review as one of the 10 Best Books of 2010.
Author Bio
William Trevor
Trevor was born William Trevor Cox in a small Irish town. He attended St. Columba's College in Dublin and received his B.A. from Trinity in 1950. He worked, rather successfully, as a sculptor until 1955, when he began to write. He moved to England, where he taught school and worked in advertising until his first novel was published, in 1958. Since then he has written many novels, innumerable short stories, and several stage and television plays. Trevor is considered one of the finest writers of his time, and has received awards that include the Royal Society of Literature Award and the Whitbred Prize for Fiction.

Praise

"Trevor's is a style that could be called old-fashioned or even Edwardian except that he has stripped it of mustiness and excess decoration. He is a master at leaving things out, even more than of putting them in, and an eloquent evoker or silences." - Charles McGrath 11/28/2010

"[W]hat lingers is less lone memorable tales than a feeling--or rather intervals of feelings that build into an emotional chord. Sorrow is the dominant note, blending with regret, wistfulness, loss, longing and an indefinable sweetness that makes the whole downer package much easier to take. Sorrow is a pleasure in Trevor world--richer, deeper and more sustaining than the crack cocaine of happiness, whose usefulness lies largely in recollection; remembered happiness sharpens the cozy pain of the present's on-and-on." - Lionel Shriver 12/18/2010
