Lorrie Moore
Lorrie Moore, the second of four children, attended St. Lawrence University, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1978. She earned an M.F.A. in 1982 from Cornell University. She is a member of AWP, the Authors Guild, and Phi Beta Kappa. Her awards include winning "Seventeen" magazine's short story contest in 1976, a Granville Hicks Memorial Fellowship in 1983, and an AWP Award, also in 1983. Lorrie Moore was named by "Granta" magazine as a "Top Young American Novelist." She has taught creative writing at various universities. After her short-story collection SELF HELP was published in 1985, Moore began to publish stories in such prestigious publications as The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and the Best American Short Stories series. Her writing is known for its wry sense of humor, its painfully accurate observations, and for dealing with tragic issues with a mix of wit and feeling.
"...Lorrie Moore is very talented, and 'Self-Help' is a funny, cohesive and moving collection of stories."
From the Publisher
Editors Note In these tales of loss and pleasure, lovers and family, a woman learns to conduct an affair, a child of divorce dances with her mother, and a woman with a terminal illness contemplates her exit. Filled with the sharp humor, emotional acuity, and joyful language Moore has become famous for, these nine glittering tales marked the introduction of an extravagantly gifted writer.
