The Caldecott Medal-winning author of "The Hello, Goodbye Window" makes his dazzling debut as a fiction writer with this engaging story of young Leonard and his friend, Norman, who along with their other friends wonder why grow-ups are so insane.
Deeply quirky, decidedly opinionated about the pitfalls of traditional education, and very funny, this middle grade novel shares a unique year in the life of Norman Normann. When the 12-year-old miserably fails to test into high school, his parents, Norma and Orman, provide him with a funky tutor named Balthazar Birdsong. Long walks, dictionary reading, and kite flying are all part of his lessons, and Norman, along with a handful of his friends, discovers that learning can be amazing. At the same time, Norman's father, a used bomber salesman, falls into deep trouble overseas, but fortunately, Norman knows exactly how to save him.
Author Bio
Chris Raschka
Author and illustrator Christopher (Chris) Raschka creates picture books on such subjects as race relations, friendship, and the wonder and beauty of jazz. Although he was accepted to medical school, Raschka instead decided to pursue a career in art. He has worked as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines but eventually turned to writing and illustrating children's books. His first book, R AND R, was published in 1990; it was followed in 1992 by his highly praised, lyrical introduction to the life of jazz musician Charlie Parker: CHARLIE PARKER PLAYED BE BOP. His 1993 picture book YO! YES? earned him a Caldecott Honor for his illustrations and was also the U.S. winner of the UNICEF-Ezra Jack Keats Award.
