Words are like a road map to reporter Camille Preaker’s troubled past. Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, Camille’s first assignment from the second-rate daily paper where she works brings her reluctantly back to her hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.

NASTY on her kneecap, BABYDOLL on her leg
Since she left town eight years ago, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed again in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille is haunted by the childhood tragedy she has spent her whole life trying to cut from her memory.

HARMFUL on her wrist, WHORE on her ankle
As Camille works to uncover the truth about these violent crimes, she finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Clues keep leading to dead ends, forcing Camille to unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past to get at the story. Dogged by her own demons, Camille will have to confront what happened to her years before if she wants to survive this homecoming.

With its taut, crafted writing, Sharp Objects is addictive, haunting, and unforgettable.

Annotation:
When two young girls are found brutally murdered with their teeth missing, newspaper journalist Camille Peaker, whose home town the girls were found in, is sent to investigate. Over the course of her stay, Camille, who has never fully exorcised her past demons, is forced to contend once again with her mother, a woman whose toxic antics may have driven Camille to a lifetime of cutting herself, along with sundry small-town characters whose savage quirks and dark secrets make the town a veritable cesspool of human failing. With SHARP OBJECTS, Gillian Flynn delivers a startlingly dark whodunit that hums with narrative tension and chilling psychological insight.
Author Bio
Gillian Flynn
Gillian Flynn is best known for her exceptionally dark psychological thrillers. Her debut novel, SHARP OBJECTS (2006), was the first book ever to win two Crime Writer's Association (CWA) Dagger Awards in a single year. Her second, DARK PLACES (2009), was deemed the best book of the year by the editors of Publishers Weekly. Flynn, who is the daughter of a film professor and a reading instructor, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. An avid fan of true-crime books, she attended the University of Kansas, receiving a journalism degree in 1993. She next worked at a trade magazine aimed at the human-resources industry for two years before moving to Chicago and earning a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. Flynn then took a job as a film reporter and TV critic for Entertainment Weekly, where she remained for a decade. When she wrote her first novel--which features a self-mutilating narrator who must deal with a mentally ill mother and deranged half-sister--Flynn met with immediate acclaim. Her subsequent books contain equally sinister themes and have met with a similarly positive reception. "Libraries are filled with stories on generations of brutal men, trapped in a cycle of aggression," she told one interviewer, after the publication of SHARP OBJECTS. "I wanted to write about the violence of women. So I did. I wrote a dark, dark book."

Praise

"A savage debut thriller that renders the Electra complex electric, the mother/daughter bond a psychopathic stranglehold....Piercingly effective and genuinely terrifying." (starred review)
