Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.
In his first novel, Wally Lamb creates a heroine--Dolores Price--who survives family insanity, rape, abuse, obesity, and the death of loved ones, emerging at the end as a strong, tough woman whose life is moving toward hope and salvation.

Sad but great8/2/2006
I read this book after my friend said it was the best book she had ever read and before Oprah endorsed it. As I was reading the book, I found I was getting up earlier than I usually do because I couldn't wait to read more. The story does have much in the way of disturbing events that happen to Delores, the main character; however, it really opened my eyes to the way that people feel on the inside when they have negative internal differences that separate them from everyone else (i.e. her weight, upbringing, etc.). In addition, this is the only book I have ever read twice, and will read again soon.
