A top Marine sniper who previously abandoned the military after a routine mission gave way to tragedy is double-crossed by the government after reluctantly being pressured back into service in Training Day director Antoine Fuqua's adaptation of Stephen Hunter's novel Point of Impact. There was a time when Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) was the best trigger-man in the military, but after growing disillusioned with the system, he disappeared without a trace. When high-profile government officials locate him at his remote mountain retreat following an extensive search, Swagger is coerced back into service in order to stop a determined assassin from taking out the President of the United States. In the process of carrying out his mission, however, Swagger suddenly realizes that he has been betrayed when he becomes the subject of a nationwide manhunt. Now wounded and desperate to reveal the culprits behind the conspiracy before it's too late, Swagger sets into motion a revenge plan that will send shock waves rippling to some of the most powerful and corrupt leaders in the free world. Danny Glover, Rhona Mitra, and Ned Beatty co-star in this conspiracy-driven action thriller that asks what it truly means to serve one's country

Product Overview

Get ready for edge-of-your-seat thrills as Mark Wahlberg ignites the screen in his most compelling role yet: the Shooter. When respected former Marine scout sniper Bob Lee Swagger (Wahlberg) is pressed into service to stop an assassination attempt against the President, the unthinkable occurs: he's double-crossed and framed for the attempt. Determined to prove his innocence, the rogue shooter is now in a high-tension race from every law enforcement agency in the country and a shadowy organization that wants him dead. From Training Day director Antoine Fuqua comes a gripping film co-starring Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon) and Michael Pena (World Trade Center). Joel Siegel of Good Morning America proclaims that Shooter is a "thriller...with a ton of white-knuckle action."

Review Despite its many well-executed explosions and chases, the political thriller Shooter still manages to be a long-winded bore. Mark Wahlberg, so enjoyable lately in both Invincible and The Departed, mumbles and grumbles his way through his one-note role here as Bob Lee Swagger, an ex-Marine marksman (and not, as the name might imply, a televangelist) who is framed as a Presidential assassin. Though Jonathan Lemkin, who adapted the script from Stephen Hunter's dense novel Point of Impact, clearly had his work cut out for him (and was, reportedly, the last of many screenwriters to tackle the long-gestating project), he never streamlined the plot enough to make this the fully accessible "popcorn picture" it aims to be. Frankly, I defy any average moviegoer to accurately recount Shooter's knotty story...But the details seem less important to Lemkin and director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) than the grander statements they present about government corruption, military cover-ups, and our loss of faith in the American political system. Noble and important themes, for sure, but their sledgehammer delivery is often more awkward than compelling...We know these shadowy conspiracies exist in every corner of the administration--this is not breaking news. It's too bad, then, that the filmmakers couldn't have attacked this problem with more subtlety and dimension and still made their salient points. What's left is a Rambo-esque, me-against-them diatribe; a busy showcase for star Wahlberg to kick ass and take names...Ned Beatty is on hand to chew some third-act scenery as a fat-cat senator...All in, Shooter doesn't entirely shoot blanks, but it misses the bull's eye by a mile.

Review We live in a world in which conspiracy theories abound, so it comes as no surprise that many thrillers incorporate governmental backstabbing, double-dealing, and cover-ups into the fabric of their story. In a time when paranoia and distrust of the government have become second nature, a movie like Shooter strikes a responsive chord. The film takes the cynic's view of the U.S. political power structure and paints an identifiable portrait. The message is twofold: never trust anyone in power and paranoia is good because they are out to get you. It also helps that director Antoine Fuqua is able to sustain tension and keep us guessing through the course of this better-than-average thriller...Shooter does what any good thriller should accomplish - it thrills. It's fast-paced, energetic, and doesn't follow a path that seems pre-ordained from the beginning. Director Antoine Fuqua recovers from the disastrous misfire of King Arthur to provide us with the kind of movie one might reasonably expect from the director of Training Day...Shooter really isn't overtly political. (For example, we don't know whether the President is a Democrat or Republican, and it doesn't matter.) It gets in its jabs, but this is primarily the struggle of one man against the system, and that's a battle everyone can relate to. The movie taps into something visceral in each of us and keeps us wondering what Swagger will do next and how he will escape from each successive trap. Involvement is key to any thriller's success and Shooter delivers it. Even in a climate where the pervasive influence of 24 can be argued to have caused "thriller fatigue," Shooter is worth the price of admission.
