| On this well-chosen set, the avant-garde singer and performance artist Diamanda Galas turns her unique vocal talents to interpreting a variety of R&B, pop, and gospel classics, with only her self-accompaniment on piano as musical backing. Her version of Screaming Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You" takes the song into even spookier, more arcane territory, while her reading of "Gloomy Sunday," the dark ballad popularized by Billie Holiday, delivers the song's unremitting despondency with an almost supernatural intensity. Songs like Willie Dixon's "Insane Asylum," the classic spiritual "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?" and "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" are all ideal material for Galas's sonically adventurous voice, which alternately resembles an avenging angel, a screaming banshee from hell, and, on "Judgment Day," the album's astonishing finale, a demented opera diva. | |

Artist Overview
Singer/performance artist Diamanda Galas has one of the most alarming voices in music history. Galas's unique vocal abilities--which run the aural gamut from blood-curdling to beautiful--are the product of her studies in classical and avant-garde musical movements as well as traditional vocal forms such as the blues, throat singing, and ritual wails. In 1988, Galas completed a three-part performance/music piece about the AIDS epidemic entitled THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH. She continues to perform well into the 2000s, constantly challenging the limits of the human voice.

- 3 Stars - Good - "...she summons up a sound that is stripped down and a fury that is razor sharp...Each song on THE SINGER is transformed into a howl, a shriek, a rant against life, death, nature, the history of music and the will of God..."
