Brooklyn's the Big Sleep are only a three-piece, but one would never guess it from the immensity of their sound. The band's 2008 release is packed with stratospheric squalling guitars, rumbling bass, and a Keith Moon-style drum frenzy that creates a psychedelic noise-rock extravaganza, breaking now and then to make room for bassist-singer Sonya Balchandani's understated vocals. The Big Sleeps influences range from Sonic Youth to the Cure to Black Sabbath to My Bloody Valentine, and while the familiar elements make SLEEP FOREVER immediately endearing, it's the vigor and flair of the synthesis that makes the band, and the album, a little slice of indie rock bliss. |
