Bearing the highfalutin name Advanced Brain Technologies, Inc. (ABT), the company issuing Sleepy Baby, one of four titles in its Music for Babies series, promises a great deal more than your average CD. This isn't just good music, mind you. It "helps infants and toddlers achieve their extraordinary, and unique, potential." It does so by introducing them to a collection of excerpts from classical music by the likes of Bach, Brahms, and Mozart, as well as traditional melodies, played by a chamber orchestra consisting of harp, celeste, violin, viola, cello, clarinet, and flute. Sleepy Baby is "a restful collection arranged to progressively lull your child into a deep and refreshing sleep." Other titles in the series carry the elitist notion, dressed up in pseudo-scientific jargon, that European classical music is superior to the music of other cultures in fostering healthy child development, a notion likely to be accepted primarily by parents who like such music themselves. This one, however, is highly functional. It is intended to put your child to sleep; the music even gets quieter during the course of the album's running time. The selections are ones that will be universally familiar as lullabies and calming airs, and the disc is likely to serve its intended purpose, whether the parents are classical fans or not. ~ William Ruhlmann
