|The Smith & Wesson Galaxy 4 in 1 Flashlight is an all new item for this year. It is first, a flashlight with 100 lumens of long distance CREE LED brilliant white light and a bulb that is guaranteed for life to never break or burn out. Run time is up to 12 hours on a single set of 3 AAA batteries (included) and the type II anodized aluminum body is weather and corrosion resistant. Secondly, use the included white filter and you instantly have one of the best and brightest camping lanterns you've ever seen. Hang it from a tree or the tent and illuminate everyone's path. The white lantern filter is also great for auto repair allowing mechanics to easily view the entire engine by simply hanging the light from the hood. Switch to the red filter (included) and you have an excellent emergency signal or low brightness "night light" great for reading or moving around the house/campsite without disturbing other guests. Hold the button for 3 seconds and the light begins to flash continuously until you click the button again which is great as a distress signal to alert others of your presence. Have a flat tire? The bottom of this handy flashlight is magnetized allowing it to easily be attached to any flat metal surface such as fenders and hoods. Included with each flashlight is 3 AAA batteries, white lantern filter, red lantern filter and a metal carabineer clip.|
Works great... for a while11/25/2010
Good performance and very multifunctional. I bought two, one for myself and one for my father. Surprisingly, my father's came loaded with nimh batteries in addition to the alkalines. I suspect his was QA'd or refurbished and had them left in by mistake. Either way, they both began eating through batteries very quickly while not being used, and then they eventually quit working all together.
This light is reasonably compact, but bright. Unlike the multiple LED lights typical in this category its strong single LED allows for a focused beam. This also permits the red and clear reflector caps to work optimally as well. The push button switch operates well and is conveniently placed on the side of the body. This is a light, easy to store unit with lots of versatility.
This light is BRIGHT! I've only played in the yard with it while walking the dog, but it beats my 2-c LED torch that was my previous champion. The only hassle is lens storage if you want to use the spot beam. I leave the clear lense screwed to the tail and threw the red one in a drawer.
Excellent flashlight for the price7/10/2009
EXTREMELY bright, this is one of the few LED flashlights I own that can stand up to a good flashlight like a Maglight (not as bright as a tactical like the SureFire). I stuck the red filter on a shelf and never use it. The two uses would be to use the "lantern" feature while preserving night vision or "emergency flasher". Using the red filter takes away a lot of the brightness, and given a choice between the two, the clear "lantern" cover is ten times more useful. Carrying both filters is sort of awkward because there isn't a place to put one of them once you remove it. If you carry one filter, you can attach it to the other end when not in use. It has a magnetic base, which comes in VERY handy. It has a stated run time of about 12 hours on one set of batteries, but I'm still on my first set of batteries and I'm up to about 14 hours -- just now thinking about changing them. Batteries are 3 x AAA, not the expensive photo batteries... Excellent value.
A great light for a great price, watch quality6/19/2009
I bought 2 of these lights and received them about 2 weeks ago. The beam from the flashlight is very strong, stronger than my 4 cell Maglight. This is a good all around safety light, as it comes with 2 screw on plastic caps. The white cap uses a round reflector to redirect the beam from forward to 360 degrees horizontal out the sides of the white cap, creating a lantern effect. The red cap works the same way, creating a red light which is not a bad imitation of a road flare. The caps screw on, and I have some concern about the ease of cross stripping the threads if care is not taken as the threads are plastic and the case metal. This light also has a magnet which is billed as allowing the light to be used as a vehicle emergency light, with the magnet allowing the light to be magnetically mounted to the underside of the hood, or even inside the engine compartment, allowing the user to keep both hands free to make a repair. The problem I had was when I opened the first light to test it. I stuck the light to the refrigerator to make sure the magnet was strong enough to easily support the weight of the light. When I stuck the light to the fridge and let go, the light dropped to the floor with the magnet still stuck to the fridge. The magnet had not been properly glued to the case of the light, which is non-magnetic aluminum, and detached with seemingly no force applied. The moral here is do not wait for an emergency if you plant to use this as an automotive safety light. Manufacturing defects rarely happen as isolated occurrences in my experiences(I'm a manufacturing engineer). If the magnet is important to you, try it out right away to confirm that it is properly secured to the light (the second unit I had purchased had no problem). Otherwise this is a great light for a great price.
Can't Beat it!6/18/2009
I have to admit I am a flashlight nut! After purchasing this and the S&W 5 Watt 2AA flashlight from Buy.Com I have returned and now purchased 6 more of these for gifts for my friends. Compared to the 5 Watt 2AA this 3Watt 3AAA blows away the 5 Watt S&W I purchased. The beam is more focused with a brighter whiter spot than the 5 Watt beam. You can not beat this light for the $19.99 delivered price from Buy.Com! The light comes with 3AAA batteries and a "D" ring clip for the lens (Beacon-Lantern) caps. You can use the "D" ring to hold the spare cap when off the light and to "hang" the light when used as a beacon or lantern. The Beacon mode turns this in to a great emergency lamp for use in the car, boating or camping. It produces a beacon that can be seen for great distance for emergencies in the beacon mode. In the standard flashlight mode you will not find a brighter more focused beam in an LED class. In fact it compares pretty darn close to my Streamlight $100.00 Strion flashlight. As far as battery life at 12 hours I would say that is a little stretch in ratings but certainly the burn time is more than respectable for a one mode (bright)regulator. I would highly recommend using Lithium AAA batteries for replacement for the longer power mode and shelf life especially when stored in vehicles and boats. The lithium AAA's will store for up to 5 years with almost no loss from sitting in the flashlight. Plus they are less prone to leakage than alkaline for extended storage and temperature variations. They are more expensive than standard or rechargeable AAA's but in my opinion when used in storage there is no other way to go. Rechargeable Nimh batteries are great when used regularly in a working environment with this lamp. The do not provide the shelf life or storage ability of the Lithium but are a lot less expensive when used often. In conclusion you can't go wrong with this light and Buy.Com!
Pros: For the price paid (<$20) this flashlight is superb. Compared to the brightness of the 1 watt Craftsman flashlight I own, this Smith & Wesson completely knocks its socks off. Outside at night, this flashlight produces a visible beam in the dark sky and I lit up the tree tops from a distance of at least 250 feet. The construction feels very solid--it has good weight to it and does not feel like cheap imported junk. There is a powerful magnet on one end, which is handy. Cons: The battery life is listed as 12 hours. Using rechargeable batteries, I noticed diminished light output after only a few hours. But I think this is not unusual for cree lights.
