Author Bio
Jacob Grimm
Jacob Grimm is famous for the fairy tales he wrote with his brother Wilhelm. Both brothers attended the University of Marburg to study law, but their love of folklore and desire to keep ancient stories alive led them to produce collections of stories. Their first collection of tales was produced in 1812, but was not written for children. A children's edition of folk and fairy tales was published in 1814 and included such stories as "Rapunzel", "Rumpelstilskin", and "The Twelve Dancing Princesses". The brothers lived together throughout their lives. In 1825, Wilhelm married Dorothea Wild--the couple had five children and Jacob was like a second father to them. There is a memorial to the two brothers in Hanau, Germany.Wilhelm Grimm is famous for the fairy tales he wrote with his brother, Jacob. She was the oldest of seven children and was encouraged to become an artist by her father, who died of tuberculosis when she was 14. After her father's death, Wanda, along with her sickly mother, assumed control of the household. Although there was talk of adoption or orphanages for her younger siblings, Wanda was determined to keep the family together. She took a job as a teacher after graduating high school and also did freelance work as an illustrator. With the financial help of family friends, she attended the Minneapolis Art School from 1914 to 1917. She later earned a scholarship to attend the Art Students League in New York. In an effort to provide money for her family, she worked as a commercial artist in fashion illustration. Her personal style continued to emerge and she was given a one-woman show at a New York City gallery. It was this show that attracted the attention of the publishers at Coward-McCann, who hired her to rewrite and illustrate the book MILLIONS OF CATS, which was named a Newbery Honor Book. Still living in New York City, she eventually moved all her siblings there as well. In 1930 she married salesman Earle Humphreys. Wanda Gag wrote and illustrated many books for children, including the Caldecott-winning SNOW WHITE and NOTHING AT ALL.Wanda Gag created one of the all-time classic picture books for children--MILLIONS OF CATS(1928).
