Editors Note
Note Director David Fincher (FIGHT CLUB, SEVEN) teams with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (THE WEST WING) to explore the meaning of success in the early 21st century from the perspectives of the technological innovators who revolutionized the way we all communicate. The year was 2003. As prohibitively expensive technology became affordable to the masses and the Internet made it easy to stay in touch with people who were halfway across the world, Harvard undergrad and computer programming wizard Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) launched a website with the potential to alter the very fabric of our society. At the time, Zuckerberg was just six years away from making his first million. But his hearty payday would come at a high price, because despite all of Zuckerberg's wealth and success, his personal life began to suffer as he became mired in legal disputes, and discovered that many of the 500 million people he had friended during his rise to the top were eager to see him fall. Chief among that growing list of detractors was Zuckerberg's former college friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), whose generous financial contributions to Facebook served as the seed that helped the company to sprout. And some might argue that Zuckerberg's bold venture wouldn't have evolved into the cultural juggernaut that it ultimately became had Napster founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) not spread the word about Facebook to the venture capitalists from Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, the Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer and Josh Pence) engage Zuckerberg in a fierce courtroom battle for ownership of Facebook that left many suspecting the young entrepreneur might have let his greed eclipse his better judgment. THE SOCIAL NETWORK was based on the book THE ACCIDENTAL BILLIONAIRES by Ben Mezrich.
Reviews
Chicago Sun-Times 4 stars out of 4 -- "David Fincher's film has the rare quality of being not only as smart as its brilliant hero, but in the same way. It is cocksure, impatient, cold, exciting and instinctively perceptive." 09/29/2010 ,Included in Roger Ebert's "The Best Films of 2010" -- "Some films observe fundamental shifts in human nature, and this is one of them." 12/16/2010
Box Office 5 stars out of 5 -- "With a thieves den of borderline-Shakespearian characters, a wickedly literate screenplay, potent direction by David Fincher, an exceptional ensemble cast and subject matter that speaks to a generation and beyond, THE SOCIAL NETWORK is mesmerizing." 09/17/2010
New York Times "[A] fleet, weirdly funny, exhilarating, alarming and fictionalized look at the man behind the social-media phenomenon Facebook..." 10/01/2010
USA Today "Eisenberg's career has been building to this bravura performance....With a disquieting stare and a string of acerbic comments tumbling from his mouth, he exudes neurotic intelligence." 10/01/2010 ,Included in USA Today's "10 Best Films Of 2010" -- "[P]rovocatively explored by director David Fincher and writer Aaron Sorkin..." 12/31/2010
Los Angeles Times "[A]nchored by a perfectly pitched performance by Jesse Eisenberg, THE SOCIAL NETWORK is a barn-burner of a tale that unfolds at a splendid clip." 10/01/2010
Wall Street Journal "This account of Facebook's founder, and of the website's explosive growth, quickly lifts you to a state of exhilaration, and pretty much keeps you there for two hours." 10/01/2010
Rolling Stone 4 stars out of 4 -- "THE SOCIAL NETWORK is a hard-charging beast of a movie with a full tank of creative gas that keeps it humming from start to finish." 09/30/2010 ,Ranked #1 in Rolling Stone's "10 Best Movies Of 2010" -- "Don't be afraid of friending THE SOCIAL NETWORK. It might just open your eyes beyond your computer screen." 12/24/2010
A.V. Club "[T]he film's crisp, dark images, plus an eerie ambient score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, create an unsettling divide between words and action, as if everyone's talking about unstoppable events set in motion long ago." -- Grade: A- 09/30/2010
Movieline "[A] seemingly modest picture that achieves something close to greatness the old-fashioned, slow-burning way: By telling a story with faces, dialogue and body language of all time, from awkward to swaggering." 09/27/2010
Hollywood Reporter "The production is the best studios can offer....[With] Jeff Cronenweth's fluid, sparkling cinematography and Donald Graham Burt's pinpoint-accurate production design..." 09/21/2010
Entertainment Weekly "THE SOCIAL NETWORK has everything you want in a thriller for the brain: huge doses of ego and duplicity, corporate backstabbing, and some very layered performances." 09/29/2010
Total Film 4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's Eisenberg's performance that captivates -- icky and icy but strangely sympathetic." 09/29/2010
Washington Post 4 stars out of 4 -- "With surgical precision, exhilarating insight and considerable storytelling flair, they make Zuckerberg both a metaphor and a lens through which to understand contemporary culture." 10/01/2010
Sight and Sound "[T]he film's rhythmic perfection, both in terms of dialogue exchanges and in the matter of building up dramatic tension within a relatively intricate three-part time structure, makes this by far the best realised Sorkin script to date....THE SOCIAL NETWORK is a classic..." 11/01/2010
Variety "Fincher's direction is a model of coherence and discipline, relying on the traditional virtues of camera placement and editing to tell the story....More than anything else, THE SOCIAL NETWORK is a feast of great talk..." 09/21/2010
Empire 4 stars out of 5 -- "Zuckerberg is played here by Jesse Eisenberg, who is simply superb as the conflicted genius, an emotionally isolated, social-climbing outsider with an unpredictable set of motivations and allegiances." 10/15/2010
Uncut 4 stars out of 5 -- "This is a surprisingly energised account of the birth of Facebook and the extraordinary trajectory of its founder..." 12/01/2010

Review ...Keep your eyes on Garfield - he's shatteringly good, the soul of a film that might otherwise be without one. The Social Network is the movie of the year. But Fincher and Sorkin triumph by taking it further. Lacing their scathing wit with an aching sadness, they define the dark irony of the past decade...
