With her sophomore album SOL-ANGEL & THE HADLEY ST. DREAMS, Solange Knowles is out to change the fact that she's best known as "Beyonce's little sister." The family connection obviously hasn't hurt her, but where her debut was a tepid, run-of-the-mill urban-contemporary offering, Solange's follow-up is a creative spray of day-glo color, proving that this artist has a confident, unique identity all her own.
Steeped in vintage R&B samples and a freewheeling aesthetic that borrows from jazz, blues, hip-hop, and electronica, SOL-ANGEL grooves, surprises, and seduces. Whether she's channeling Marvin Gaye ("Ode to Marvin") or the stripped-down Motown vibe of lead single "I Decided," or dabbling in hip-hop or electro, the disc is fun back to front. Help from the Neptunes, Cee-Lo, Mark Ronson, Q-Tip, Lil Wayne, and Bilal makes the package glitter, but it's Solange's quirkiness and exuberance that makes this one of the better R&B albums of 2008.
Artist Bio
Solange"Perceptions are not always based in reality, and nobody knows this better than me. With the release of my sophomore album, Sol-AngeL and the Hadley St. Dreams (Music World Entertainment/Geffen Records), I am ready to have every listener step into my very personal field of dreams, minus the preconceived notions. When you look up the word biography, the Webster dictionary defines this as a written history of someone's life. Well, I figured no one would be able to tell this story better than I could, which is why this won't be a traditional artist bio.My life as a performer started very early on. Classically trained in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance, I stepped in, unexpectedly, as a back up dancer when a Destiny's Child dancer suddenly had to leave the tour. This position gave me the opportunity to travel all across the World to places such as Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa and Mexico. It was then I developed a deep sense of culture, style, and artistic influences. At the age of 16, I released my debut album, Solo Star, on Columbia Records. This album was a creative turning point for me; a melting pot of different genres and sounds including R&B, Reggae, Alternative, and even Country. My first single "Feeling You," featuring Noreaga, was a Reggaeton/Dancehall inspired song. This was always the vision I had for the record despite my label's own reservations. Although I had all of the big-wig producers on board (The Neptunes, Timbaland, Rockwielder, and the Underdogs), I struggled to find one sound of my own. However, I found a new love for writing which I was able to showcase on Kelly Rowland's debut solo album, Simply Deep, shortly after.Tapping into an old passion, acting was next on the radar for me. I was ready to soak up any great opportunity I could get and when I was selected to play the daughter of Cedric the Entertainer and Vanessa Williams in Johnson Family Vacation I signed on." --Solange

Review When asked about her elder sister in recent interviews, Solange Knowles has tried changing the subject with a dismissive "I don't find that interesting at all." Not a very realistic strategy, but you can't blame her, if this peculiar little gem of a record is anything to go by. Beyonce might have the ten tonne voice, million megawatt fame and 24ct looks, but Solange seems to have inherited the personality and the soul...So while big sister's last record, "B'day" was an arrestingly eclectic and surprisingly tough R&B slammer, "Sol-Angel And The Hadley Street Dreams" is a more retro, idiosyncratic and melodically lush affair. Opener "God Given Name" can be taken as a declaration of independence, with its whoozy Marvin Gaye strings, restrained vocals, drug references and insistence that "I'm no sister". It's difficult to imagine Beyonce pulling this one off, but Solange does it with playful panache...Whether "Sol-Angel And The Hadley Street Dreams" will make Solange a superstar in her own right may be doubtful; only the vibrant, peppy "Sandcastle Disco" sounds like an obvious follow-up single, and elsewhere the album could be either too relaxed or too eccentric for many. But it's a fine, rich and extremely likeable record, nonetheless, and it deserves to find its audience even without that famous surname.
