We'll never know all she had to sad.

by on 5/20/2004

Eva....after listening to her for the very first time, I was in awe. What a voice, and let's not to forget her songs. She was a talented lady who had it all. The only regret is ours.......because our so called music industry was unable to niche her, she was never given the opportunity that she so deserved and as such they denied us the joy of her talent. Stop the pigeon-holeing of great talent and let the public decide. Rest in peace Eva................

Product Overview

Though almost painfully shy and with virtually no pretensions to stardom, singer Eva Cassidy still made a huge impact on the music scene in her native Washington, D.C. She was called "an unclassifiable and inspiring musician" by Jazz Times magazine. The Washington Post said "she could sing anything—folk, blues, pop, jazz, R&B, gospel—and make it sound like it was the only music that mattered," which may explain why the Washington Area Music Association honored her as Best Female Vocalist in four separate categories: blues, jazz-contemporary, jazz-traditional, and roots rock/traditional R&B.

Cassidy died of melanoma at the premature age of 33 in November of 1996, leaving a grieving family and music lovers, but not before also leaving behind a scant few recordings of her one-of-a-kind voice. Though demue in front of audiences, she ventured into local clubs and began warming to performing live when she started realizing that her singing touched and affected people. Musical insiders say that Eva Cassidy was on the verge of breaking through to a national audience at the time of her death.

This posthumous anthology is the perfect introduction to the astonishing vocal talents of Eva Cassidy, a young, relatively unknown singer who died of cancer at 33, just as her career was beginning to gain steam. Cassidy, a native of Washington D.C., gained local favor with her pure, straightforward tone and her lovely, tasteful interpretations of everything from standards to gospel to contemporary pop.
SONGBIRD is a definitive best-of selection that picks from Cassidy's studio albums and shows the depth and breadth of her skills. SONGBIRD's perfection as a compilation is in its song choice, which covers Cassidy's takes on gospel ("Oh, Had I A Golden Thread"), soul (Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready"), pop (Sting's "Fields of Gold"), and well-known standards ("Over the Rainbow"). Cassidy's own perfection stems from her ability to bring the same precise, inventive phrasing and crystalline tone to each individual song, regardless of genre, making it indelibly her own. This collection became a best-selling number-one album in the U.K., and with good reason.
Artist Overview
Eva Cassidy was an American singer who mixed folk, pop, standards, and soul in a gentle yet affecting manner. Though she was initially known only around her Washington, D.C., home base, word of her talents began to grow--though unfortunately only after her tragically early death in 1996 from cancer at the age of 33. She gained a huge posthumous following in England, which eventually spread back to her own country. The only shame is that she wasn't around to enjoy it.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (8/30/01, p.125) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...She effortlessly shuffles styles and the song selections are astute...Cassidy comes across as a bluesier version of English folk singer Sandy Denny....she melts her personality into the fabric of each melody..."
Q (3/99, p.93) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "Eva Cassidy had the power to leave the nerve-centre tingling. She possessed a rare emotional honesty and a knockout voice (closest relation: Roberta Flack) and applied them to whatever material took her fancy..."
