Performance

After reading reviews and specs I thought this would be the ideal addition to my small video business. I have customers with 8mm, minidv, vhs, etc that want them transferred to DVD. I had been capturing to my hard drive and outputting through my video editing program. This would have simplified the process greatly and not tied up my video editing computer. If it worked as described it would be worth it at twice the price so I rated the value at at 5. It is definately easy to use so again a 5. However performance and thus satisfaction is a 1. The problem I had was garbled audio. I used verbatim dvd+r 8x which is a sony certifed media for this product but no go. The video is fine but the audio is terrible. Can't solve the problem and have an RMA number from buy.com to return it. I would really love to keep it if it worked properly. If someone can give me advice please do so.

The DVDirect is now better than the first with the addition of a firewire port. This recorder can be used stand-alone as well as attached to a computer. The new version allows you to record in stand-alone to both +/- DVD media (the first version only allowed +dvd in stand-alone). The additional of the firewire port means you go digital to digital when you record from a firewire source, DV, Mini-DV, and such. The only catch is, the Firewire is not for computer communications, it is only for video input. The other handicap is, there is no output from the drive, which means you cannot monitor the output of the drive, nor can you play back the DVD in the drive to confirm the recording in stand-alone mode. The advantages, extremely portable, compact, basic menu system, and an option for autoplay DVD's. I have used the drive while recording event video. As soon as the event is over, I already have a DVD master that will autoplay in most DVD players, I can pop it in a DVD Duplicator tower and offer copies for sale immediately following the event. Conclusion, for a home entertainment system, this may not be the DVD recorder you are looking for. But, if you are looking for something that is portable, flexable, and user friendly. This drive is a great option.
