Master sorcerer balthazar blake recruits a seemingly everyday guy in his mission to defend new york city from his arch-nemesis, maxim horvath.
Editor's Note
Inspired by the beloved segment of the Walt Disney classic FANTASIA, THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE moves the setting of the story to modern-day Manhattan, where decidedly average teen Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) hones his magical powers under the tutelage of master sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage). Malevolent wizard Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) is determined to claim New York City as his own. And Horvath isn't alone in his diabolical endeavor, because by joining forces with the sinister sorcerer, pop illusionist Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell) aspires to gain powers beyond his wildest imagination. Realizing that he can't take on Horvath and Stone alone, Blake recruits Stutler as his reluctant assistant and begins training him the battle that will determine the fate of the Big Apple. Teresa Palmer and Monica Bellucci co-star.

Expert Review The Sorcerer's Apprentice - DVD Review DVD Reviews

Inspiration comes from the strangest places at Walt Disney Pictures. Recent films released by the studio can trace their roots back to classic works of literature (Alice in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol), video game franchises (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), and a popular theme-park ride (Pirates of the Caribbean). Yet even in this potentially limitless realm of adaptable, creative ideas, Jon Turteltaub's kid-focused fantasy The Sorcerer's Apprentice boasts a unique muse. It owes its existence to an eight-minute animated sequence found in a 70-year-old film. the full review

The movie starts out in Britain, the year 740 A.D. where an epic battle is taking place between Merlin (James Stephens) and Morgana Le Fay (Alice Krige). Included in this terrible conflict are Merlin's interning sorcerers Balthazar Blake (Cage) and his love Veronica (Bellucci). They are trying to stop Morgana from obtaining the spell that would enslave mankind. With the battle nearly won, in comes Maxim Horvath (Molina) to betray Merlin and his fellow sorcerers. His duty is to Morgana and aids her in retrieving the spell from Merlin.  Veronica sacrifices herself to stop Morgana from obtaining the spell by trapping Morgana's  soul within herself, but Morgana begins to fight her way out of Veronica, Blake saves the woman he loves by trapping them both within a magic nesting doll called a Grimhold. Centuries later,  many other sorcerers tried to free Morgana to find themselves also trapped within the nesting the full review

Professional Reviews

Box Office
3 stars out of 5 -- "Cage, with long hair and a cheeky attitude, dominates the proceedings with a quirky sense of fun and authority, while Baruchel plays his geeky side and generally succeeds. Best of the bunch, though, are the villains, particularly Molina..." 07/13/2010

Chicago Sun-Times
"The director, Jon Turteltaub, and his several writers devise some clever set pieces, such as a dragon in a Chinatown parade that starts breathing smoke and fire..." 07/14/2010

Entertainment Weekly
"[Cage] is at his most charismatic...the CGI is spangly fun..." 07/23/2010

3 stars out of 5 -- "THE CG magic certainly pops and crackles, and offers New York as a fantasy-realm as dragons spit flames in Chinatown and a Chrysler Building eagle takes flight." 09/01/2010

"[The effects] rival that of HARRY POTTER, LORD OF THE RINGS, and every other modern wizard blockbuster." 11/30/2008
