Not the best but a good dystopian movie

on 5/8/2012

Soylent Green isn't a great movie. It moves rather slow and there isn't any continuous action until the movie's last fifteen minutes. However, Heston and Robinson are both great in their roles. Also, the movie made a deep impact upon the culture of our society and is watching at least once for that reason alone. Read More

Product Overview

Soylent Green is landmark screen science-fiction, a riveting entertainment and a cautionary tale that holds a mirror to a tomorrow rife with ecological disaster. Working well again in the futuristic genre following Planet of the Apes and The Omega Man, action titan Charlton Heston portrays Thorn, a detective prowling the dank streets of a polluted, overpopulated Big Apple gone rotten in 2022. He's trailing a murderer ? and the trail leads to a stunning discovery. Vividly realized, Soylent Green's world gains its power not just from its special effects but from its heart ? a human dimension magnified by the performance of legendary Edward G. Robinson in his moving screen farewell.

Editors Note
Note 21st century New York City is (still) an overpopulated mess, and the only food left is Soylent Green, a soybean and lentil concoction with an extra-special, government-mandated ingredient. As police detective Thorn (Charlton Heston) investigates a murder, he learns of a conspiracy with bizarre implications. This Edward G. Robinson's final movie, as the star died not long after filming his final scene. Based on Harry Harrison's "Make Room! Make Room!"
Plot Summary
Summary A nightmarish vision of the future set in New York City circa the year 2022. The population has swelled to 40 million and the environment is so ravaged by pollution that a synthetic food known as Soylent Green is the only kind available. When the director of the giant corporation that manufactures this food supply is murdered, the detective investigating the case gradually discovers the horrifying truth about Soylent Green's secret ingredient.
Entertainment Weekly "...SOYLENT stands up remarkably well, largely due to Richard Fleishcer's suitably stark direction..." 08/08/2003 p.58
Rolling Stone "...[Heston is] one of the movies' all-time great plot-twist screamers..." 08/21/2003 p.88

Chuck O'Leary, Fantastica Daily This futuristic thriller just seems to keep getting better with age. An entertaining sci-fi flick done before special effects took over the genre.
Ryan Cracknell, Film Threat A thought-provoking movie that is still relevant with the many environmental concerns that are out there now.
Urban Cinefile This influential vision of an overpopulated future has a horrific plausibility that's hard to shake off.
