It is my first morning of high school. I have seven new notebooks, a skirt I hate, and a stomachache. (from the first line)
In this powerful novel, a teenage heroine delivers a blow to the hypocritical world of high school.
From the Publisher:
Freshman year at Merryweather High is not going well for Melinda Sordino. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, and now her friends—and even strangers—all hate her. So she stops trying, stops talking. She retreats into her head, and all the lies and hypocrisies of high school become magnified, leaving her with no desire to talk to anyone anyway. But it’s not so comfortable in her head, either—there’s something banging around in there that she doesn’t want to think about. She can’t just go on like this forever. Eventually, she’s going to have to confront the thing she’s avoiding, the thing that happened at the party, the thing that nobody but her knows. She’s going to have to speak the truth.|
Annotation:
From the beginning of Melinda's freshman year of high school, she's labeled a snitch and a loser--she called the cops at an end-of-summer party, and a lot of kids got in trouble. But Melinda's holding a powerful, horrible secret, and it's eating away at her, taking away her voice along with everything else. Though she has no one to turn to, she soon discovers what she must do to help stop her suffering--and she refuses to remain silent anymore. A 2000 Michael L. Printz Honor Book.
Author Bio
Laurie Halse Anderson
Laurie Halse Anderson grew up in Syracuse, New York. Ever since she was a young girl, she loved to read books. Even though she tended to read many books at once (a habit that she still has!), her favorite book was J.R.R Tolkein's THE HOBBIT. Now that she's a role model for many young aspiring writers, Laurie has three important things that she thinks kids who want to write should know: 1.) Read everything you can get your hands on, 2.) Be kind to your English teachers, 3.) Don't be one of "those people" who just talks about being a writer--BE a writer! It seems that Laura followed her own advice, because her first young adult novel, SPEAK, was nominated for the 1999 National Book Award for Young People's Literature. When Laurie found out that she had been nominated, she felt "stunned, honored, grateful, giddy, bewildered, amazed, thrilled. And happy. Very happy." Laurie feels that the highest reward any author can receive is to know that he or she has written a good story. Besides this award-winning young adult novel, she has also written three picture books: NO TIME FOR MOTHER'S DAY, TURKEY POX, AND NDITO RUNS, all of which were received with praise. Laurie's favorite writers are Chris Crutcher, Francesca Lia Block, Karen Hesse, Karen Cushman, and Robert Cormier. A fun fact: her grandfather was a forest ranger.

Praise

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"[This] book is also keenly aware of the corrosive details of outsiderhood and the gap between home and daily life at high school....[T]his is a gripping account of personal wounding and recovery." - Deborah Stevenson October 1999
