In dire need of a muse to record the everyday details of her artistic life, Monica Szabo hires a commodities broker who brings along an unexpected shift to the balance of wealth and power in their professional relationship.
From the Publisher:
Monica Szabo, a middle-aged, moderately successful painter, encounters B, a wealthy commodities broker who collects her work. B volunteers to be her muse, offering her everything that male artists have always had to produce great art: time, space, money, and sex.

Passionate, provocative, and highly engaging, Spending displays Gordon's maverick feminism, her extraordinary wit, and her unique perspectives on art, money, men, sex -- and the desires of women.

Author Bio
Mary Gordon
Mary Gordon, an only child, was raised a devout Catholic. Her B.A. is from Barnard, and she has an M.A. in writing from Syracuse University (1973). Her first novel, "Final Payments" (1978), was an enormous popular and critical success. Like that novel, much of her subsequent fiction explores themes of faith and gender.

San Francisco Chronicle Book Review
"'Spending' is a fantasy, a fairy tale about the gratification of desire; it's full of descriptions of beautiful clothes..., luxurious settings and lavish meals, not to mention inventive sex. All of this produces a bit of literary indigestion....Luckily, Gordon writes so well that irritation is smoothed out by enjoyment of her creamy, witty prose." - Rebecca Radner 02/15/1998
