Michelle Branch

by Sarah Stokes on 6/18/2002

In a time when boy bands and pop princesses rule the airwaves michelle branch is a breath of fresh air. She not only plays guitar and sings but she also writes her own material. A rarity these days. This album is a one of a kind in a industry over flowing with britney spear wannabe's and n'sync covers. she delves into despair and then picks you up and makes you want to sing along. It not only catchy but also very good. If i could recommend any album it would definately be this one. don't just take my word for it listen to the sound clips. they give you a glimpse into an amazing album by a very promising artist.

Michelle Branch has a voice that'll be familiar to fans of alternative rock radio, since it's that breathy, close-miked sound beloved of pop-rock girls from Fiona Apple to Britney. She uses it to good effect on her debut, THE SPIRIT ROOM, accompanied by a coterie of LA session veterans who provide her with the sort of assured musical expertise that only big bucks can provide. Each song is hook-laden and charmingly sung. Standouts are the infectiously poppy album-opener "Everywhere" and the oddly retro-sounding "Sweet Misery." The overall effect conjured by THE SPIRIT ROOM is of an assured pop debut--Branch certainly leaves you curious to hear her next effort.
