Some Things Can't Be Buried.
Ray and carla are having an affair and unwittingly start a violent sequence of events that quickly spirals out of control into arson, murder and blackmail when they attempt to run away together.

"The Square really tightens the screws - it's so skillfully made it makes you shift uncomfortably to the edge of your seat. It's a binge of cringe.  G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle
"Like all good noirs, it has an almost comic appreciation for how the best-laid plans can go horribly wrong.  Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor

Editor's Note
Temptation turns a man's life upside down in this noir-influenced thriller from Australia. Ray Yale (David Roberts) is a construction worker who is married to Martha (Lucy Bell) and is helping to build an upscale resort hotel just outside Sydney. Ray isn't entirely happy in his marriage, and his roving eye has become focused on Carla (Claire van der Boom), a hairdresser who lives next door. Carla is married to a low-level mobster, Greg (Anthony Hayes), but she craves excitement and is soon having a torrid affair with Ray. Carla knows that Greg has a large bundle of cash hidden in their home, and she hatches a scheme she shares with Ray -- they steal they money, set fire to the house, and run off together, with Greg imagining the cash was lost in the blaze. While Ray isn't interested in a life of crime, he can't say no to Carla, but when he develops cold feet at the last minute, his attempts to reach Billy (Joel Edgerton), who was hired to torch the house, are unsuccessful, and things take a turn for the worse when he learns that Greg's aged mother was in the house when it burned to the ground. Ray quickly realizes he's been implicated in a murder, and Billy doesn't hesitate to use this knowledge to his advantage. THE SQUARE was the first directorial project for Nash Edgerton, who previously was one of the leading stuntmen in the Aussie film industry.

Professional Reviews

Chicago Sun-Times 9 of 10
The Square moves with implacable logic toward catastrophe, as its desperate heroes try to squirm out of a tightening noose. Step by step, mistake by mistake, their delusion is trampled on by reality. More horrible things happen in this film than are probable in any scenario short of a large anvil falling from the sky and flattening the town, but it remains mostly plausible from scene to scene...Crime doesn't pay. This we all know. Adultery has a way of making itself known. Adulterers who hope to steal cash and live happily ever after are really asking for trouble. Note to adulterers with such a plan: Never try to carry it out until you first join your partner in sin on a 72-hour bus ride...One of the best elements of The Square is how well it establishes the rhythms and layout of its town, which is in New South Wales, cane toad country. I was waiting for a cane toad to figure in the plot, but Edgerton is admirably disciplined. That's why the movie is so effective. The acting is convincing, the characters are realistic, nobody is looking for trouble, fate plays a role, and we clearly understand who everybody is. There is a shot from a high bluff down to a house on fire, and we already know whose that house is...The Square has been compared to Blood Simple and A Simple Plan. High praise, but not undeserved. It's so good to find filmmakers with quiet, firm confidence in story and character. An unseemly number of people die here, but never in "thrilling" scenes, which are so rarely even interesting. They die because, despite their best efforts, something happens to them. Note to thieves and adulterers: Live so as to prevent things from happening to you. - Roger Ebert
