|For true multimedia versatility, IREXT allows you to extend remote control of devices at distances of up to 35m (115ft.), using a radio frequency that can operate through walls, doors, and around corners, etc. Now, you can control your A/V devices from greater distances or even from another room, allowing added configuration versatility for multi-room or outdoor applications, without having to move within range of your remote controlled device. Unlike ordinary remote controls which are only effective in close range. The IREXT uses a radio frequency which can operate through walls, doors, and around corners, etc.|
Customer Reviews of StarTech Wireless Infrared Remote Extender
I bought this based on the price and the 3 fairly positive reviews on the Buy.com website. After setting it up and realizing how bad it is, I searched around on other sites and saw others ripping it apart as well. I have been able to get it to work but it is very inconsistent. I have the receiver and transmitter less than 5 ft apart separated by one sheet of drywall (other room is unfinished). Holding the remote less than a foot away from the device labeled "transmitter" (technically a receiver of the IR signal and transmitter of the RF signal), I could not get it to consistently work. I've messed around with different placements of the units and antenna positions and found something that sort of works (about 1 out of every 3 button pushes actually works), but I will definitely be looking for a different product.
Works well with line of sight6/3/2010
This was a good value for the cost. DirecTV receive is in the closest behind the wall. Transmitter is on the coffee table next to a plant and relatively hidden. Pro's - I only have this little receive in the open. Con's - you have to point the remote directly at the transmitter so it has to be somewhere accessable from all seating areas. We placed it in line with two seating areas and it works great. Wish the IR transmitter was more like a computer camera and fit on top of the Plasma, but for $35 this was a good value. Will think about another set if we get rid of our entertainment center.
Works as described. Very happy with it. The receiver and the transmitter are only about 8 feet apart though, so I do not know how it works further away.
I saw the Jensen for sale for $8-9 less with some bad reviews and this unit with no reviews but Buy.com is awesome for returns so I thought I'd take a gamble. I have it on a DVR on one level and the TV elsewhere in the house. Works perfect. Was a piece of cake to set up, nothing else to do but plug it in. Range (DVR IR remote to Remote Extender Transmitter) is about 12 ft max BUT, the DVR IR remote I'm using it with ain't the greatest so I can't say what the effective range would be with a decent quality IR remote. In fact, if I take the DVR remote to the actual DVR, it has a range of only 6-8 ft and is so uni directional, you better point it AT the DVR IR sensor or it doesn't work. None the less, where I'm using it I'm never more than about 10ft away from the TV downstairs and I didn't even know about the 12ft limit until I tested it specifically for this review and I've been using it 2 weeks. Regardless, For what I wanted and how easy it was to install and use, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Only gave the Value 4/5 as I think it's a little pricey for what it is considering all it does is extend IR but everything else, 5/5. Happy with the purchase.
