HARD BUT IMPORTANT READ

by Ben Washburn on 11/1/2010

This is a book in which content overrules all other considerations. James Hansen will never win any writing prizes. But if you have the patience to wade through his evolving personal conflicts, you will come to a chilling understanding of the global warming issue, about which none of the nay-sayers and even most of the supporters haven't a clue. I have not found or seen this information anywhere else. That's why this book should be on your "Must Read" list. Read More

Praise
"[Hansen] has written a whistle-blower's account while still at the top: a story of how our political system is so willfully, deliberately blind to environmental realities that we have no choice now but for American citizens to take direct physical action against the polluters. It's hardly what you expect to hear from the upper echelons of NASA: not a call to the stars, but a call to the streets. Toss a thousand scientific papers into a blender along with ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN and Mahatma Gandhi, and you've got this riveting, disorienting book."
"Using numerous charts and graphs alongside accessible explanations, Hansen presents copious climate data for a broad audience....After discussing the recent history of global warming science, from the Climate Task Force of 2000 to his up-to-the-minute carbon dioxide limit of 350ppm, [he] provides recommendations for achieving greenhouse gas reduction, as well as strategies for reducing or eliminating fossil fuel use....Hansen's message is stirring as well as urgent, and should be required reading for anyone involved in public policy." (starred review)
"Rich in invaluable insights into the geopolitics as well as the geophysics of climate change, Hansen's guaranteed-to-be-controversial manifesto is the most comprehensible, realistic, and courageous call to prevent climate change yet. It belongs in every library." (starred review)
From the Publisher
Annotation As the head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies since 1981, Dr. James Hansen has had a front-row seat from which to observe the endless diversions and digressions employed by Congress to avoid making laws and industrial regulations to combat the advance of global warming. Now that Hansen is a grandfather as well as a scientist, he has felt compelled to take his struggle to the public with his first book, an accessible and distressing analysis of climate change and global warming which indicates that the planet is heading towards certain environmental catastrophe within the century. Hansen condemns world governments and corporate lobbyists for obfuscating facts in regards to global warming and for openly obstructing the measures needed to eliminate the use of fossil fuels and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. After presenting copious amounts of convincing data to support his claim that global warming is much worse than has been reported, Hansen outlines specific solutions which must be enacted as soon as possible if we hope to protect future generations from the wrath of a wounded and combative Mother Nature.
Editors Note A leading scientist on climate issues offers his views on the growing threat of human-caused climate change and looks at why the proposed solutions are not sufficient to stop a global meltdown.
