Editor's Note
Fergal Keane of WILD AFRICA and GREAT RAILWAY JOURNEYS hosts this ambitious five-part documentary program, which provides a sweeping, ambitious history of the country of Ireland. The series rests on the thesis that early 21st Century Ireland is somewhat unusual - existing as it does in an atmosphere of peace. As Keane and the program's writers remind us, such peace is entirely unique and novel for a country rooted in a long and torturous history of bloodshed and terrorism. With that as a foundation, STORY OF IRELAND looks at the Irish as a people, and Ireland as a modernized European country. Installments, which take a chronological approach to Irish history, include: THE AGE OF INVASIONS, THE AGE OF CONQUEST, THE AGE OF REVOLUTION, THE AGE OF UNION and THE AGE OF NATIONS.

Although (as far as I know) I have no Irish blood, that is irrelevant. Besides U2 and Guinness beer, about the only thing I previously knew about Ireland were stories of IRA bombings. Obviously, I had a great deal to learn, and The Story of Ireland tells an incredible the full review
