From the Publisher:

Your first love is totally wrong for you.
Do you follow your heart?
Or do you run away?

What am I doing? He’ll take one quick look
And wish he was anywhere else but here
I’m already ashamed of what I think
He will think of me, of the life I lead

Yes, she is the fruit that will
Sustain me and yes, she brings
A rain that I know can chill
But it is a rain so sweet and sings
A song my soul insists
That I follow, if I would exist
As more than I have ever, ever been
If my mother calls it evil, then I embrace the sin

Interlocking stories of love, pain, and family connections are set in a series of poems in this stirring young adult novel by Walter Dean Myers, the author of MONSTER. Seventeen-year-old Harlemite Damien Battle is on his way to an Ivy League school and has a nice enough girlfriend when he falls for Junice. This alluring girl from the street has serious troubles of her own, with a mother in jail, a little sister to care for, and uncertainty about their future. Damien seeks her out, feeling certain she's The One, while Junice must fight for her life in a system that doesn't understand. Will love be able to grow in such difficult circumstances? A Kirkus Best Children's Book of 2006.
Author Bio
Walter Dean Myers
Walter Dean Myers's mother died when he was young, leaving his father to raise eight children alone. When he was three, Walter was taken in by a nearby couple, Herbert and Florence Dean, who moved with him to Harlem, New York. A speech impediment contributed to his unhappy time in school, although he did love to read and write. When he was 16 he won a prize in an essay contest, which encouraged him to continue his writing although he eventually dropped out of school and joined the Army. Afterward, he held a series of jobs before becoming a full-time writer. His first book for children, WHERE DOES THE DAY GO?, was published in 1969 after it won a competition sponsored by the Council on Interracial Books for Children. Myers has been awarded the Newbery Honor, the Coretta Scott King Award, and the Margaret A. Edwards Award for his contributions to young adult literature.

"[E]ntire poems dazzle readers with rhyme and rhythm and voice..." 10/15/2006

"Written with rap beat and rhyme but no invective or obscenity, the switching viewpoints make this great for readers' theater...The realistic drama on the street and at home tells a gripping story." 10/01/2006
