| Street Songs of Love, Alejandro Escovedo's follow-up to 2008's universally acclaimed Real Animal, marks a return of sorts and simultaneously begins an entirely new chapter in his long artistic career. Escovedo re-teamed with producer Tony Visconti, who helmed Real Animal's sessions. But there is also a first here. While Escovedo's live shows have been full of rock & roll moments, his albums are best-known for his poetic ballads with a few rockers carefully layered in. Street Songs of Love changes that up: this is a recording of straight-up, tough rockers with a crack band and backing chorus that weaves a few ballads into the mix. It's a startling new twist that should excite longtime fans and make the uninitiated sit up and take notice. The album was mixed by Bob Clearmountain and contains guest performances by Bruce Springsteen on "Faith," and mentor/friend Ian Hunter on "Down in the Bowery." | |
