High School coach Freddy Shoop has plans: summer in Hawaii. But the vice-principal has plans for Freddy, too. Teaching remedial English. Aloha, paradise. Hello, Summer School. Director Carl Reiner delighted fans and critics alike with this warm, perceptive comedy about a laid-back teacher (Mark Harmon) who has as much to learn as his class of likable misfits. Together, they survive, goof-ups and good times on the road to academic success... and the self-respect that goes with it. Earn straight "A's" in laughter... take Summer School.

"Harmon, in his first starring screen role, is a real charmer.  Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times

Editor's Note
A laid-back high school coach (Mark Harmon) reluctantly forfeits a Hawaiian vacation to teach remedial English to a class of likable misfits. This goofy comedy tells the sweetly inspiring story of the group of high school slackers who seem destined to fail until they land in the coach's class. As both students and teacher accept the fact that they must complete the course, all learn a great deal about themselves, their priorities, and friendship.

Summer School is a lame and obvious stunt piece, but damn if it doesn't know it. Mark Harmon's a lazy teacher stuck with the worst students in school for summer classes. Eventually he's tasked with getting them to pass The Big Test, only to find that they're completely unmotivated and that one of them is totally illiterate. In fact, his job is on the line if they fail....read the full review
