Author Info
Walter Dean Myers
Walter Dean Myers's mother died when he was young, leaving his father to raise eight children alone. When he was three, Walter was taken in by a nearby couple, Herbert and Florence Dean, who moved with him to Harlem, New York. A speech impediment contributed to his unhappy time in school, although he did love to read and write. When he was 16 he won a prize in an essay contest, which encouraged him to continue his writing although he eventually dropped out of school and joined the Army. Afterward, he held a series of jobs before becoming a full-time writer. His first book for children, WHERE DOES THE DAY GO?, was published in 1969 after it won a competition sponsored by the Council on Interracial Books for Children. Myers has been awarded the Newbery Honor, the Coretta Scott King Award, and the Margaret A. Edwards Award for his contributions to young adult literature.
"[A] light-hearted introduction to a fascinating place in one of its finest and most exciting periods."
"Through precise, believable dialogue as the catalyst, tame compared to that warranted in FALLEN ANGELS, Myers's expert portrayal of a soldier's feelings and perspectives at the onset of this controversial war allows the circumstances to speak for themselves."
"In limiting the story arc to the early months of the war, Myers effectively augments the irony of the Civil Affairs mission, as Robin and his fellow soldiers keep alert for telltale signs of WMDs that readers will know will never be uncovered."
"Given the paucity of works on this war, this is an important volume, covering much and offering much insight."
From the Publisher
Annotation Set in 2003, Walter Dean Myers's powerful young adult novel about the Iraq war follows recent high school graduate Robin "Birdy" Perry as he tangles with the thorny issues of being a soldier in a complex war. Inspired by 9/11, Robin joined up despite his father's severe disapproval, and is part of the Civilian Affairs Unit. Working in a foreign culture under fire brings up issues that Robin has only read about in his uncle's letters from Vietnam. Although he's there to help the Iraqi civilians, it's not always clear who the enemy is, and Robin soon learns that absolutely nothing is black and white, everything seems to be a shade of gray. This is a sequel to FALLEN ANGELS. A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2008 and a New York Times Notable Children's Book of 2008.
