Spider-Man, X-Men and the Fantasic Four will never be the same after this outrageously funny spoof of your favorite comic book movies! Drake Bell (Drake & Josh) stars as a nerdy high school student bitten by a genetically-altered dragonfly. He stumbles hilariously through the process of becoming a crime-fighter and as his new powers grow, so do the laughs. Sara Paxton (Aquamarine) and Christopher McDonald (Spy Kids 2) costar as the clueless damsel in distress and the comically intense super villain, along with Pamela Anderson and Leslie Nielsen. Going from superzero to superhero has never been this much fun!

"...[there's] a lot to laugh about in this silly parody.  Betty Jo Tucker, Reel Talk
"...a completely on-the-nose satire of "Spider-Man."  Felix Vasques, Jr., Film Threat
"...smarter than most of its lowbrow brethren in the Hollywood sub-sub-category known as the spoof movie.  Jason Anderson, The Globe and Mail
"Undiscriminating comedy fans hungering for the High School High of superhero parodies need look no further.  Nathan Rabin, The Onion A.V. Club
"With great power come laughs.  Staci Layne Wilson, Sci Fi Weekly

Editor's Note
In this spoof of Hollywood blockbusters, director and screenwriter Craig Mazin (THE SPECIALS) tackles the age-old story of a regular guy who suddenly finds that he possesses super powers. Ricky Riker (Drake Bell) is a typical teenager, except that his luck is worse then most. Basically, he's a loser. He's been in love with beautiful Jill (Sara Paxton) for years, but is sure she doesn't know he exists. Even his techie best friend, Trey (Kevin Hart), is willing to throw him over for another clique. But Rick's life changes dramatically when a genetically enhanced dragonfly bites him during a school field trip. In a flash, he becomes the Dragonfly. He can scale buildings, and has immense strength--though he's still a klutz. Rick isn't sure he has what it takes to be a superhero, but it's up to him to save the city from the villainous Hourglass (Christopher McDonald), who literally sucks the life out of people, and threatens to harm those dearest to Rick.

Mazin, who was one of the screenwriters for both SCARY MOVIE 3 and SCARY MOVIE 4, spoofs a gamut of superheroes, including Batman, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Marion Ross and Leslie Nielsen appear as Rick's Aunt Lucille and Uncle Albert, and a multitude of stars appear onscreen, albeit briefly, including Tracy Morgan, Regina Hall, Simon Rex, Craig Bierko, Pamela Anderson, Robert Hays, and Nicole Sullivan. Miles Fisher is particularly amusing as Tom Cruise, and Brent Spiner plays Hourglass's sidekick. Stick around after the credits start rolling for some additional footage.

3 stars out of 5 -- "The film-makers are masters of parody and shamelessly cram the movie full of satirical wit, endless cinematic spoofs, funny comic book-inspired one-liners, and sharp-edged lampoons of every superhero movie we've ever seen." 05/01/2008 p.62 5 of 10
Anyone hoping for a ray of sunshine through all the dank, dark clouds that have made up the recent rash of genre spoofs (Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans) should semi-celebrate. Superhero Movie is not the heinous hunk of landfill those other attempts at humor represent. Instead, it's a seldom-hit, often-miss attempt by some former members of the Airplane! team to recapture a little of that film's old school satire...The first thing that's shocking about Superhero Movie is how quasi-coherent it can be. Writer/director Craig Mazin, who cut his cinematic teeth on the likable James Gunn comic-book comedy The Specials, does a good job of channeling Spider-Man, X-Men, and Batman Begins, without going whole hog into pointless pop-culture minutia...Of course, the many remaining missteps ruin everything...Still, if future installments follow Mazin's concept and simply stick with making fun of specific cinematic types instead of whatever randomly falls down the YouTube/Facebook pipeline (though what could possibly be left?), the next of these unnecessary movies might not be yet another sign of the entertainment apocalypse. In fact, Superhero Movie should be taken as a well-meaning but ultimately uneven lesson in how to handle future parodies. - Bill Gibron

San Francisco Chronicle 6 of 10
How can you tell the target age for "Superhero Movie" is exactly 13 years? Because most of the jokes are Internet-related...Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and everything Apple come in for fond lumps, and when a character says "You're no longer in my Five," it's a giggle for anyone 20 or younger and crickets for everyone else. This could be the first iComedy...As such, it's not terrible - splattery business as usual from the folks who gave us the "Scary Movie" franchise. Like its forebears, "Superhero Movie" delivers generic-brand Mad Magazine yuks, the broader and smuttier, the better...Director Craig Mazin wrote the script, making this as close to an auteur film as these movies ever get, and one of the producers is David Zucker of "Airplane!" fame. Accordingly, there's a strong genetic strain of that classic in "Superhero Movie," from a flashback cameo by Robert Hays as the hero's unlucky father (he tells the kid to sell Google stock and buy Enron) to Leslie "Don't call me Shirley" Nielsen as Rick's Uncle Albert. Marion Ross plays Aunt Lucille like Mrs. Cunningham from "Happy Days" with a severe flatulence problem..."Superhero Movie" would make a decent long-form short on the Funny or Die Web site, but at 85 minutes - 15 of which are outtake-heavy end credits - its powers of amiability wear off fast. - Ty Burr
