Reeve returns as the Man of Steel in this rollicking sequel. Three fugitives from Krypton travel to Earth, and give Superman a great big headache. Hackman returns as Lex Luthor, and he's as funny as he was in the original adventure.System Requirements:Run Time: 127 minsFormat: DVD MOVIE

"...a big, generous, beautifully crafted piece of entertainment...  Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
"It boasts a more consistent tone, better special effects...  Entertainment Weekly
"Full of great effects and entertainingly played...  Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide

Editor's Note
Once again mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve), hiding his identity as Superman, must fight for law and order. This time around, a triumvirate of nasty villains from the planet Krypton break free of their dimensional prison and hightail it to Earth, where they enjoy the same superpowers as Superman. Meanwhile, Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) has discovered that Superman and Clark are the same person, so Superman debates whether to give up his abilities to become a normal man and share his life with Lois. Richard Lester (A HARD DAY'S NIGHT) takes the helm for this sequel, which is arguably the equal of the original hit film.

Professional Reviews

Entertainment Weekly
"SUPERMAN II is a marvelous toy. It's funny, it's full of tricks and it manages to be royally entertaining..." 06/19/1981 p.C8

Ultimate DVD
5 stars out of 5 -- "There's such detail in the city shots, the landscapes and the scenic design that we really are discovering this movie anew, the colours are magnificent..." 07/01/2007 p.21

ReelViews 9 of 10
Rectifying one of Superman's flaws, Superman II offers not just one, but three, effective villains. Each of the criminals from Krypton is as strong as the Man of Steel, and their amorality makes them far more dangerous...Superman acquaints us with the characters and sets up the scenario; Superman II takes the plot threads introduced in the original and resolves them. In my review of Superman, I noted that it is possible to watch and enjoy that film without having seen the sequel. A similar comment can be made regarding Superman II - having viewed its predecessor is not a necessary prerequisite to appreciating the second installment. - James Berardinelli

Chicago Sun-Times 10 of 10
"Superman II" begins in midstream, and never looks back (aside from a brief recap of the first movie). In many ways, it's a repeat of the last ninety minutes of the first film. It has the same key characters, including archvillain Lex Luthor. It continues the love story of Lois Lane and "Superman", not to mention the strange relationship of Lois and Clark Kent. It features the return of three villains from Krypton, who when last seen were trapped in a one-dimensional plane of light and cast adrift in space. And it continues those remarkable special effects...This movie's most intriguing insight is that "Superman"'s disguise as Clark Kent isn't a matter of looks as much as of mental attitude: Clark is disguised not by his glasses but by his ordinariness. - Roger Ebert
